According to an interview with IGN Miyamoto says that Nintendo is working on the next gen portable and wont revise the 3DS. So I guess there is no reason to wait for a 3DSXL or one with two circle pads.

Its like a surprise party,they will keep it hidden away from you until they are done.
But as for the next gen handheld,I think its early for talk about that,give it a few or more years.
They'll be a new one at some stage, just not for a while.
Hopefully my current one can last till then, and hopefully the next model isn't some big, ugly monstrosity like the DSi XL.
They should keep it the same size but just make it better.
For the ten-hundredth: That's what they WANT you to think.
If there was a 3DS remake on the cards soon they would have talked about it by now. The fact that they're still saying it's never going to happen suggests that we won't see one this year. Next year is anyone's guess.

A redesign is pretty much guaranteed, it has always been a nice money spinner since it was first done and has been done on almost all consoles since. What is unlikely is hearing about it officially until about a month before the release to give Nintendo time to sell stocks of the old models. As soon as it is announced officially, sales of the current model will all but stop.
What is surprising is that Miyamoto actually said that they are working on the successor to the 3DS. While it's pretty obvious that they are (no sense having R&D staff sat around doing nothing once the current gen is out), it doesn't make a lot of sense to talk about it too early as, again, it can halt sales of the current gen if people think it is imminent.

It'll happen eventually.....
Nintendo has been making a small adjustment to their current portable gaming market since the Gameboy Advance.
The Gameboy Advance really needed some of the changes such as the battery and the screen brightness, the 3DS less so, however I think there will be redesign at some point just not for a long time. I think Nintendo will make plenty of money selling the current design in a variety of colours without have to change anything major.
Nintendo will always be working on their next handheld and even there next system, its only natural. Doesn't mean they are planning on releasing anything soon.

@ImDiggerDan I totally agree.
We'll see a redesign (hopefully not a big, ugly one like I previously said) but there's no way they're going to talk about it until it's nearly ready to launch.
They want as many people buying the current model as possible before they bring out a new model.

It's not a redesign it's just bigger like the DSi XL wasn't a new system, especially since it would've been stupid to release the XL as a NEW system the same day the 3DS was revealed back in 2010
