The 3DS has been out for 3-4 years. No it's not too soon

I was hoping the 3DS would get a new improved redesign in 2014 (the 2DS is more of a budget redesign that didn't even come out in Japan).

To put it bluntly, your friends are idiots

Idiots with money. Don't forget the money. Or they're just going into thousands of dollars of debt.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

the New 3DS was released too late, it's just a 3DS with better details but nothing in it saying "I'm a new system!!!!!!!"(I mean, the new features most certainly do require the small bump in power it'll have)
they should have released it last year at least, because I'm sure the next handheld is just around the corner(and by that I mean probably 2016/2017)

Don't get me started lol.

The system itself is nice and all but it's the dividing of the fan base I have a problem with. Also the seemingly removal of features from current to future games to help push the New system sales. If Nintendo wanted to include Miiverse and the cpp in smash then they could've. Thing is I think they made a business decision to not have those in perhaps their biggest game to help sales along. What's weird though is the choice to not bring the New system out along with the release of Smash and hold of to next year in the west.

I want to also say that I think Nintendo is working on a new Metroid that will only be playable on the New system and that will be a big mistake if exclusive new game titles start hitting the system. Also not happy about getting a new memory card either. It just all smells like a cheap money ploy to me. And yes I know they're a company out to make money!

It was released too late, dudebro.

Not changing this until Valve remakes Half-Life for the New 3DS.

Yes, let's focus on the hardware and not the thing that the hardware is for, namely THE GAMES!

While I concede that if you look at the hardware, it may as well be a next gen handheld, if you look at the games, it's clearly that it's still just another type of 3DS and that there won't be a lot of pressure to buy it, if you already have one. Consider it the 3DS Pro, if you will. Forget all those silly peripherals! They're already IN this system! The games haven't changed, just the device playing them.

I think of it of the next gen system because it's a new console with more buttons and better performance for upcoming full big games for that system (Xenoblade Chronicles) but with backward 3ds compatibility. The logique is inverted by saying it's a 3ds with exclusive games. I think Game Boy to Game Boy Advance is a more fair comparison than DS to DSi

By looking at specs, hardware etc we can't say if its the new gen or not, but should look at how they produce the games

So far there is only 1 exclusive game, and 3ds games seem to still be coming, making it a dsi in my opinion. If they stop regular 3ds game production and only make new 3ds games then its a new gen, seeing as we haven't seen them do either, we can't say its a new gen, or not

Well the PS4 more powerful than a PS3 let a PS3 slim is the same as a phat.
Like with the Wii U it's a more powerful than a Wii.
So really as the N3DS is a more owerful system means it's a full on successor to the 3DS so really not a revision.

Look at the DSi it may have added off the shelve features (e.g. double RAM better wifi & download service) it's more akin to the PS3 slim including a Dualshock 3 controller vs Phat Sixaxis controller.

Well maybe Nintendo will make xenoblade the only exclusive for the new 3DS and nothing eles exclusive to the New 3DS. But I highly doubt that either way I want to get a new 3DS and them covers. I just find them so appealing.

Nintendo should've released the New 3DS from the start. That way we wouldn't have to waste money on more revisions.

But that would have created an even higher launch price, so less people buy it...

If it's not HD then It's not a new system. A little more power is nice and it has some nice features but no way in the world is it a successor. I doubt we see more then 5 games that will be exclusive. At best we will see what they did with Smash and gimp features for the old 3ds. Besides it's not like Xenoblade is even a new game. Sure it would be nice to have on the go but it's rather weird that's the flagship game to get people interested.

I still have this really bad fear the next Metroid will be that exclusive.

I don't see all the effort to for all the custom chipset in the 3DS just for a handful of games.
It's Like If Nintendo develop a more poweful Wii with only a couple of games for before the Wii U was released.

I'm sure once the 3DS games run dry there be just as many N3DS games like you would expect with a fully fledge successor.

If it's not for the games then why whould it really need extra processor.
Sure there's a boost to make the Menu's & Mii Verse run faster & Downloads slightly faster, yet for a mere revision that update is not really needed.
Besides which as for downloads go, really only 25% of the world population has the 25-30MBps needed to prevent the timeout errors anyway.

Think of it retail wise the DSi only had a handful of DSi enhanced games & those really only enhanced by using the camera or even the double RAM yet no games at all show boosted performanced.

Yet the 3DS has more proccessing & as Iwata said there be games with better graphics.

as for HD think of it this way hay many generations of consoles in a row had the exact same resolution.
Both the NES &SNES uses the same resolution & most N64 games use exact same resolution yet each console up is a next generation up.
Yet the single most common theme that each system have is that the next system up is more powerful.

The Name: Although I would have preferred the name "Super 3DS", the fact that Nintendo called it "NEW 3DS" isn't such a bad thing, really. Marketing 101: Easiest way to sell your product? Say it's brand new (whether it is or not) - people always flock to what is NEW! It's a much better name than the Wii U, which is easily more confusing and just plain bad.

Is it Next Gen: No. As many others have pointed out, this is no different from the DS evolving into the DSi. It may be an evolution - a handful of exclusives, proper browser and e-shop downloading speeds, slightly better 3D, etc - but, it's definitely not a revolution. Speaking of which, Nintendo should really have gone with Revolution ifor their console name instead of Wii U. Grrr.

The timing? Just about right, IMO. Tech gadgets get upgraded all the time these days. It's been years.

This formally concludes my first post. : D

I think NEW nintendo 3DS is a good name for japan, as the word NEW does not carry the same meaning. Just like the 3DS XL is called LL in japan I expected a different name from Nintendo for western releases unitl I saw australia's nintendo Direct. I think it would be beneficial to change the name before release but it has probably already gone into production.
