If any game exist that can only be played on the New 3ds and not the old 3ds, then it IS a new generation. If games become exclusive, it is not an optional upgrade. We're not forgetting anything.

It is not a new generation so stop saying it is. Xenoblade Chronicles is one game. By your logic the DSi would have been a new gen, which it wasn't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Believe what you want but I assure you, updating the processing power does not make it a new gen. Nintendo of Japan would know better than all of you if it was a new gen but they haven't said it is. So stop it already. Move on.

Technically the DSi could be classed as a new gen, because, even though there were only 4, there were exclusive games meaning you had to buy the console to play them. So, yes the New 3ds can be classed as a new generation (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!oneone!!!!). So stop getting ridiculously angry already. I have an opinion. Move On.

The PSP 2000 and 3000 as a note increased specs, at least in the case of doubling the RAm, I think there were a few games that even required the increase of RAM and wouldn't run on the 1000 correctly. My memory may be incorrect.

Sounds right to me, I had the 2K and 3K units back in its better days before piracy ripped it to death. I don't get this whole New3DS is a new system junk and people saying it's all new hardware. Hardly, and before you ask...'no comment' but it's just the 3DS beefed up, that's it. It's a cheap effective way for them to rake in a lot of profit off existing parts. Nintendo did this with the GB to GBC an DS to DSi. The GBC doubled the CPU as did the DSi too for speed and both got added RAM too to handle more features and specific stuff for games ready made for them. It's nothing new, nothing remarkable. I really doubt they'll take the existing hardware and entirely revise it across the board while being similar it's too expensive, and that's how the GC to Wii to WiiU went. It's being cheap, but not cheap enough.

The DSi never had any CPU speed increased just the whole media miss-interperting what Iwata said, just like how the famous "Smelling farts prevents Cancer" myth gone.
The DSi never had anything more than of the shelf updates.

Look guys be real here.....we don't know for sure that it'll be released here because it has to sell well so that it can sell here as well. Keep in mind that just because its announced for 2015 doesn't necessarily mean that I'll be out there anytime soon so don't have high hopes on this one yet.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Okay, at first the name didn't bother me much but now that I'm actually looking for the Japanese new 3DS I'm realizing what a ***** this name is making searching for one. Typing in "new 3DS ll" on auction is going to give you a bunch of regular 3DS listings where the condition is "new". Ugh, Nintendo. -___-

Considering the 3DS has had its time to penetrate the market with its member, I will say that hte New 3DS is not too soon. In fact, it's more than welcome; think of it like a DSi with "DSi Enhanced titles" only this time those titles will be much bigger and better like Xenoblade Chronicles.

kawaiipikachu: Seems to me it does, at least that's what I've picked up reading hacking/emulation sites talking about the changes in the hardware. If they're wrong, do you have something to show this as I'd be surprised.

I can't see how it's more like a DSi.
The DSi has absolutely no changes to it's custom chipset at all only off the shelf updates as compared to the N3DS.

Xenoblade Chronicles proves that the N3DS has it's custom chipsets updated thous makes it much like a new console itself.

yeah, but that doesn't matter much because there's a 99.9% chance it's not getting that much more than that.

There's no reason to care unless it actively interferes with 3DS game development.

I for one hate this announcement and hope it turns out like the DSi in that it actually had exclusives but most of them are titles nobody cares about. Its too soon Nintendo. u_u

I don't get the complaint. I wouldn't say the New 3DS is like the DSi, but rather more similar to the Game Boy to Game Boy Color situation. I haven't read the entire thread, so I assume someone has already pointed this out.

People will be confused!? These days, people are confused if there ISN'T a new hardware upgrade every year. Seriously. Get with the times lol

The 3DS wasn't impressive when it launched spec-wise except for the glasses free 3D, which turns out was not a selling point for very long or for enough people. So the tech in the thing needed the Apple "S" treatment quite badly. Funny thing is, if this happened to the Wii U, the gaming press would be applauding and in turn us internet fan junkies

The New models are a stopgap, not the next generation handheld. They are to extend the current life cycle until the true successor is ready. What is so difficult about that?

One main factor many are missing of why the New 3DS is coming out is simply product parity. They want the same features present on the Wii U and on the 3DS to serve as a step into the direction of having the whole handheld and home consoles experience merge together, falls in that with that whole fusion console idea.

That might be the case if it's only the c-stick, better 3D & snap
As it has updated processor update & better graphics it certainly makes it a whole new system.

A stopgap is more like the DSi which added the cameras & download system yet it does not include any increased processing power.

The DSi had a slight RAM bump I think. the Game Boy Color needed some extra power for the color. the PSP 2K and 3K also had spec boosts, but they weren't next gen successors.
