We discuss the people who said a few weeks earlier... "no no no the 3DS has under 100ppi" and we laugh at them.
People don't realise that, just because the game is written in 3D and doesn't utilise all the pixels from the screen doesn't mean that the screen itself can't produce HD quality graphics.
...and typed in the resolutions for the New 3DS (800 x 240 and 3.53") and you get 236ppi.
...and the New 3DS XL (800 x 240 and 4.88") and you get 171ppi.
Whoever said before that the ppi is less than 100, in yo' face!
To be true, the bottom screen resolution is always 320x240 and the top screen is designed to display 3D graphics and that it is how it is supposed to be used and then is 400x240 and not 800x240. So the numbers you get are the following and are pretty low compared to any smartphone or the Vita (which is 220ppi):
Nintendo 3DS: 132.15 pixels per inch on top screen, 132.45 bottom screen.
New Nintendo 3DS: 120.23 top screen, 120.12 bottom screen.
Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 3DS XL: 95.59 top screen, 95.69 bottom screen.
There are many great things about the 3DS but the screen is not one of them, and it gets much worse on the 3DS XL and New 3DS XL. That's why I got the smaller New 3DS.
My old Moto G had 326ppi (720p on 4.5inch) and my Moto X 2014 had 423 (1080p on 5.2 inch, overkill i know...)
Im fine with the 3DS having this ppi but i hope the next nintendo handheld could have a 720p screen (1080p its a freaking overkill, let alone 2k, i can hardly see the difference between 720 and 1080p, i do can see it coming from a 540p phone)

That's wrong, the New 3DS top screen is 3.88" and the original 3DS top screen is 3.53".
@Faruko, I agree with you, hopefully next Nintendo handheld has one good screen. And scratches-resistant, please!!
Yeah sorry it's 3.88" so it should be 215ppi and not 236 ppi. The top screen is 400x240 in 2D but in stereoscopic 3D is actually 400x240 to each eye, which counts as 800x240 which is why it looks sharper in 3D than 2D. So 800x240 @ 3.88" = 215ppi.

I don't think that counts, since each eye is only seeing 400 pixels horizontally. It's not mixing them together to appear like 800, but it is still only like seeing 400 pixels, each eye just sees different colors to create a 3D image.

True.
I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

In 2D mode, both your eyes see the same pixels in the same viewing angle plane (VAP). However, in 3D mode, each eye sees a different set of the 400 pixels in separate VAPs so the optical pulses sent from your eye to your brain actually sums up the number of pixels to 800 as opposed to viewing 400 in the same VAP.
@bushido_fai Yeah. While it does make the image seem longer horizontally, at most reaches about 500~ pixels, depending on how deep the 3D effect is.
Remember that while each eye is receiving different images, they're just two slightly different angles of the same scene.
For it to be "800 pixels" each eye would need to receive two completely unrelated images. And it would make no sense for your brain, so the effect would be lost anyway.

Are you a doctor or an ophthalmologist?

People don't realise that, just because the game is written in 3D and doesn't utilise all the pixels from the screen doesn't mean that the screen itself can't produce HD quality graphics.
As someone who couldn't care less about this issue... I can still assure you that the N3DS can't produce "HD quality graphics." Doesn't mean the games can't look good, of course.
