Topic: New 3DS owner...completely lost

I just got a brand spankin' new 3DS XL, and the last portable system I owned was an original GameBoy. I'm completely lost. There seem to be so many Etrian Odyssey's and Fire Emblem's etc. Where would be a good place to start? I enjoy older JRPGs (like Final Fantasy IV-VII). I've also never played a Pokemon game before, and I was thinking of getting Y. What about the Ace Attorney series? Animal Crossing? I'm just feeling overwhelmed by the amount of games available. I've already gotten Super Mario Land 2, and the FFIV DS remake.

Fire emblem, Pokemon and a Mario would be a good place to start.

I am an avid monster hunter player that started quite recently on Ultimate, (Blue Rath Armor currently) the gameplay just keeps me coming back for more!
Currently playing;
Super Mario 3D World
Wind Waker HD
Pokemon X
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion, and Fire Emblem are the main other Nintendo 3DS games people will/should suggest.

just get whatever looks interesting. Though with Ace Attorney I'd find a way to get into the previous titles before you get the upcoming 3DS one, for multiple reasons. I wouldn't bother with the recent Mario titles unless you've avoided any recent titles in the series.

Bravely Default is coming out at some point, which is the closest to old school FF on the system (not sure about Tales of the Abyss...)

yeah it's overwhelming! I had to skip a lot of games not enough money to buy them all! O.o
Fire Emblem might be a good Idea and Shin Megami Tensei gets a lot of praise. if you like action shooters go for Kid Icarus Uprising. Ocarina of Time 3D is great too, from Eshop I'd recommend Harmoknight, Denpa Men and Steamworld Dig. Pokémon is great and I heard X/Y takes easy on starters(with the Exp.Share item but if you like challenge you can turn it off) oh theres also Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate if you don't mind hard to get used camera controls. well, if you stick with Pokémon and Shin Megami Tensei(or ANY other Atlus RPG) you migh have more fun since you like traditional RPGs

Most of the first party games are really good. If you aren't sure about Fire Emblem and Etrian Odyssey they have demos in the eShop, same goes for Ace Attorney. i suggest that you try and find the other Ace Attorney games and play them first. If you have an iPhone or and iPad you can get the first three games in HD for about 17 dollars. The first two cases on the game are free, so it gives you a good feel of the game before you buy it.

Which Fire Emblem should I start with? Would the newest one (Awakening?) be an ok starting point?

the DS Fire Emblem was too messed up in my opinion. so I'd recommend you to avoid it. go for Awakening!

And would Pokemon Y (or X for that matter) be ok to start with? The only Pokemon game I've played in the N64 one...

The N64 one isn't main series, so I wouldn't really count it, but yes, X or Y would be fine starting points. All of the pokemon games are accessible by design.

Pokemon X and Y are really good for starters, and I would skip the DS Fire Emblem, Awakening is much better because it is also good for beginners.

^ I don't know... maybe I'm spoiled for having started with Fire Emblem Radian Dawn.... something in it just felt wrong, maybe because at the time I didn't know it was kind of a "remake" of the first fire emblem so I expected something more interesting.... all I know is that it was my least favorite Fire Emblem.

^Yeah, a lot of people didn't know it was a remake of the original. So it would make sense that they except more of it.
