Topic: New 3DS North American Release Does Not Include Charger!?

Please tell me this is a joke!
I understand that in Japan the New 3DS does not come with a charger. When the 3DS XL came out it did not come with a charger either except for the North America release which DID come with a charger. Will this be the same case with the New 3DS?
If it in fact does not come with a charger, what are your thoughts?
I think that it will only hurt the sales further in North America if it is not included.

If you have any news articles or videos about this topic please include them, especially if they pertain to the NA release.

yep. They want to save money, which ironically, will probably end up making them lose money because nobody wants to trade in their current XL model without being able to keep it which Gamestop in NA requires you turn in. So yeah....

I guess they figured that most of the people who are getting a New 3ds are upgrading their system(s) while keeping the older one(s) rather than a first time purchase in the 3ds family or a trade in for their older model.

IMO only if you're a person (likely adult) who is not tech savvy buying it for somebody or someone who need extra cash to buy it (likely kid) than this is bad news. Otherwise you can buy one for less than $10; even less than $5 if you know where to shop. I like to believe they're part of the minority.

I think it makes sense. From the DSi and the 3DS, I already have an extra charger so I don't need a new one. It saves them money, and if you aren't paying for a brand new charger (that you don't need), then it's saving you money, too.

I could however see it as a problem for late adopters who've never touched a DSi/3DS system. But as Reggie said you can always buy the charger separately — is it really all that bad?

Seeing as it is compatible with a number of chargers that most people have at least one or two and they are doing this with other countries i see this as the same way they pushed the wiiu and the wii controllers... the market is pretty saturated so most people already have them...why waste production on spares?

Well they require it because the system was sold with it. Since EU doesn't get chargers they probably don't require it. GameStop is going to have to stop requiring it for New 3DS XL

But consider this, of those who have one charger, how many of them are going to keep that charger and the system it came with? The n3DS isn't a new console, just a new iteration, so keeping both a 3DS and an n3DS is somewhat redundant. What about all the people who don't have a 3DS and want to get in now?

I always thought NoA understood that their market values not having to buy a separate proprietary charger with their electronics, so the decision not to include it is really baffling to me. In fact, I can't really think of any mainstream American products with proprietary chargers that don't come with them. Sure, you have some devices that omit a standardized USB-MicroUSB charger, but you don't see the iPhone 6 Plus come without a cord because "Oh, everyone has a lightning charger in their homes".

I feel like the only person in the US that was surprised when the normal XL came with the charger. The European market accepted it and made that business strategy successful, why wouldn't they do that in other markets? At least that is how I thought.

But how do you know it was successful? What if the 3DS XL would have sold 10M more units if it had a charger (an exaggeration, but do you see my point?)?

They made enough money in the market where they felt they didn't need to include the charger in other regions. That is how I know Nintendo considered it successful. Before that seeing how they never went back and started including the chargers also told me Nintendo thought it was successful

It's penny pinching, simple as that. Problem is it makes them look cheap especially when everybody else throws in a charger whether the purchaser has one or not. They either need to go to a generic Micro USB or if they insist on a proprietary charger include it in the box.

Also when you trade in your system without the charger GameStop charges you the amount for a charger, basically taking that out of how much they give you. So you can trade in your system without the charger you just won't get the highest price. There may be an issue if they don't have the charger in stock but you should be fine.
