Topic: New 3DS XL hinge problem....

That would drive me crazy. If it becomes an actual problem, such as not being able to support the to screen, I would recommend returning it. But if it's just like that and doesn't cause problems, I'd keep it. I bought my Zelda XL day 1 and it had 2 dead pixels. But they're so tiny it didn't affect my gameplay. Though it still bugs me. I hope you find a solution

Any one else got this problem? If not I'm going to return it, just I've not seen any other complaints but I don't know if the 3DS XL is just like this as this is my first one.

@scaramoosh My New black 3ds XL has the same issue. I don't think it's that big of a deal. Google "3ds loose hinge" and you'll get some results of similar situations. Nintendo has a FAQ on it here: http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_...
It seems like this happens and as long as it's clicking into place and isn't causing problems during gameplay, it should be fine. However, if it really bugs you try contacting Nintendo. I'm going to keep mine and hopefully it doesn't get worse, which I don't really foresee how it could. If it was too tight, that would be an issue that could cause cracking.

It isn't so much the flapping as I can move the screen side to side, it is like they forgot to put a bit of rubber in the end or something.

seems ok to me you want amount of play in the hinge to reduce ware not to a extent were the top wont stay open, but the play you describe seems to engineered to reduce ware and protect it.

In typical Nintendo fashion I still haven't had a reply... I'm just gonna get a full refund as I bought one from Amazon France for £134 yesterday. The Zelda one being £209 was a rip off and I bet if I sent it for repair it would end up all scratched up or something.

Mine does this slightly - I work in a game store, so I've had the opportunity to have a look at many other New 3DS systems whilst customers do their system transfers. Every one I've seen so far has the same issue, so maybe it's simply a bizarre design choice rather than an actual fault.

EDIT: The hinge moving back and forth is definitely normal - as long as it clicks in place, a slight movement is normal. My above comment is in regards to the sideways movement you've shown in the video.

Let me ease your minds!

The 3ds is ment to do this, maybe someone remembers the dsi? where it was really tight and made it crack at some point.
They made it a bit lose so it would not crack, so that it's a bit lose is nothing to worry about.

I'd say its a defective unit and returning it is your best bet. You just shelled out $200 for a shiny new console so might as well get what you're paying for.

The exact same feature is present in my New 3DS XL MM version.
I think it's not that big of a problem. It's not like it moves on it's own.

Hey

I managed to speak to a Nintendo Rep on the phone today as mine is the same but not as bad as that it's only slight.
They told me this is normal and part of the design since they had many issues with the DS Lite having cracked hinges.

Dunno if he just wanted me off the phone or not but was told not to be alarmed it's supposed to be like this

I also have this with my Majoras mask new 3ds xl, if it is indeed as designed, couldn't they of used black hinge/screw instead of the silver? Kinda annoying but hard to see on mine, but I know it's there lol....

I would like Somone to confirm theirs doesn't have this all? Does your screen move from right to left like 1mm? If everyone's screen moves a bt from right to left then it's normal but if we have people with completely sturdy hinge that doesn't move from right to left then this is a manufacturing defect that probably won't cause an issue.... I just wish it was colored black on the bolt.... I can't see mine much unless I'm outside with daylight or very bright light but the movement is what bothers me the most as my 3ds xl didnt have this left to right movement.

Yep have the metallic black one and it does this, i sent for a replacement from the retailer as i was also worried because the old 3ds xl doesn't do this. anyways the replacement new 3ds xl also had the same issue ;-s

so wether its a fault or not i'm still unsure and probably will need to wait and see if nintendo acknowledge it and make a statement. as long as it don't break i'm ok to wait for now. within reason anyways under sales of good you have 5 years or 6 in England if you suspect it faulty and not to last a reasonable amount of time and you have this video as proof of when you found it.

nintendo are funny at times they can be helpful and not so in others and just give you lies to get you off the phone as i have found out latley .
poor customer service in my book so i hope we all get some relief and clarification at some point from nintendo hq just to put peoples minds at ease or they will be undated with returns and endless calls and emials.

Sorry, I might be a bit late to the party, but mine's the same.

So we still have no one who's new 3ds screen doesn't move from side to side about 1mm? I'm guessing this is how it was desgined, until somone confirms theirs doesn't do this. Why did they have to use silver bolt for the hinge lol, I can't see it most of the time but when I do it's ugly lol.

It puts me at ease that it seems everyone who has posted has some movement from left to right. I am sure there are many new 3ds xl users wondering if it's a manufacturing defect. If it is a slight defect it also put my mind at ease that it seems that the majority if not all the launch units have this small defect, if indeed it even is a defect. Lol I'm way overthinking this.....

The hinge is probably intentionally loose so it doesn't shatter like the original DS, DS Lite, or snap all the time like the 3DS and 3DS XL.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.
