Well, my 3ds is 7 years old now and its definitely showing its age. The d-pad for example is losing its coating, some pieces of coating are hanging loose (between the d-pad and the device) but it still works. However, yesterday the cap of my 3ds circle-pad came loose. Now I think I can easily fix it with a bit of glue or double-sided tape, but I don't know how long that will last.
It was to be expected: Devices don't live eternally anymore, and I use my 3ds almost daily. For example, I played Metroid: Samus returns yesterday for 3 hours straight (not the best sidescrolling Metroid, but still pretty fun)! And to think I just bought a 32 gb sd-card because I was running out of space.
Anyway, I think I do need to buy a new 3ds someday. Luckily that's quite affordable nowadays, but I'll try to keep my 3ds living as long as possible. Because for the most part it still works really well (I have the Zelda limited edition, the one bundled with Oot 3d)!
@Henmii Not the least bit surprised to hear that. My first gen 3DS got replaced as I completely wore the A button out. And my New 3DS XL had the glossy coating pealing off it which led me to replace it with one of the normal size New 3DS units that has a matte finish(and those nice replaceable face plates that Nintendo abandoned).

When my 3DS dies, I might do what you did: Going for matte-finish.
Anyway, the glue seems to work. Played 3 hours yesterday and 2 hours today, no problems so far!
