So for the past few weeks, I have noticed that my 3DS was overheating which has never happened before. I left my 3DS to charge on my lunch break, and when I came back home, the battery light was flashing red. Now, my 3DS won't charge at all and has run out of battery.

Natually, I'm panicking because I can't afford a new one, and the console is out of warranty.

What do you guys think?

the exact same thing happened with me when I had a Game Boy Advance SP your best bet is to not panic save some money and send to repair I did the exact oposite and it ended in two pieces in an attack of childish frustration for having stopped to work exactly when I was about to send my first shiny pokemon into Pokemon XD to keep it until my GBA-SP was fixed.......
the most important thing to remember is to leave it alone until you send to repair or the situation can get worse.

I was once a fighter in spirit alone, but not long ago I found something that was missing and became a fighter in body and mind too.
looking forward to Codename S.T.E.A.M.

@ReverendJames: Just because it's out of warranty doesn't mean they won't repair it for you. Try contacting their customer service line and see how much they want to fix it for.

As tbd said, you can still get it repaired through Nintendo out of warranty, but it'll cost money. iirc it should be around $75 (plus shipping there) to fix a problem like that.

Exactly.

Well that's pointless. I can buy a brand new 3ds for around £100 and I'll have a year's warranty on it. Will I lose all my save data now then?

The first thing that came to my mind was "HIDE HE BODY"

But... You can send the old and new 3DS to nintendo and they'll transfer your data... Or if you can use it connected you can do the transfer yourself.

If you buy a new one, your data can't be transferred. If you have yours repaired, you're data stays, unless its totally fried. And every repair comes with a new warranty. It's far from pointless.

Good to know, thank you. I think it's pretty bad that you lose all your data unless you get it repaired though...

If its just a battery problem can't you just buy another battery from them? Sounds like the battery is just dead.

I love Erica (Strike Witches), Eureka (Eureka Seven), and Tenma (School Rumble), stay away from them. xD
Update: Also love Yukari and Mizore from Rosario + Vampire.
Another Update: Also Yuuki...from School Rumble...
Yet Another Update: Also Amber and Xiao Pai from Rune Factory 4.

Do you think that this would be considered a minor repair? Because if so, it would only cost me £50

I mean, if you're able to play the system while its plugged in, then it would be the battery. If you can't get the charger to really work (as in, its not giving power at all, then its another problem.) You still may want to call Nintendo, but if your system is able to stay on while plugged in, then yeah, dead battery. :p

EDIT: If that's the case I checked their online store and sell batteries for the regular 3DS for $15.

Na, the charger won't charge up the 3DS anymore and I get no LED light, so could be the charger?

That sucks...I wouldn't know then...best to call Nintendo and help you out there. I'm guessing either the charger or that connector on the 3DS was damaged. Have another charger somewhere?

I'm no tech expert, but a quick glance opinion would be that your battery is fried.
Those are usually quite cheap to get replaced.

Either way, don't get over-panicked over this, it'll just make things worse. Relax, it's almost definitely something minor. :)

Oh, another couple of things:

  • If you've been using your console whilst it's charging - that's why it's overheating. My iPhone is notorious for it. :D
  • It could also be that your charger is done, try that before you shell out on a battery. ;)

but if the battery is fried I'd recommend to avoid trying to charge because a fried battery is almost like no battery at all(but a little worse) it could break your 3DS for good if you insist on trying to charge.

@Reverandjames - as GustavoSF said, it's probably not a great idea to try charging your battery again (incase it IS fried). Is there anyone else in your home with a 3DS/XL?

If so, I would recommend trying your charger on their DS'. Incase it's just your charger.

Yeah, if your 3DS worked in some capacity you would be able to transfer stuff onto a new system. But since that's out. Just send it to Nintendo.

@Link-XL @GustavoSF Thanks guys, Yeah, I used it quite a lot when it was charged in come to think of it now... I've booked it in for repair with Nintendo now, just waiting to receive a postage label via email...6 hours and counting. Oh, and I am panicking a bit because I don't no what's going to become of my Animal Crossing town!

@willobee I have read a few forums now who say pretty much the same thing. Either way I have to get it repaired as the battery is dead. Thanks for your advice.
