Only thing I liked about underwater, is that Dire Miralis was pretty epic. But having to deal with him in the water was irritating.
The whole thing would've been better if the camera didn't freak out 90% of the time.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
I wouldn't say that underwater combat didn't work at all. The Ceadeus fight, for instance, was really cool. Royal Ludaroth was actually my favorite monster in 3. And chasing monsters down into the water was always cool. It's just that fighting faster aquatic monsters was a pain because movements were so sluggish.
I'd like to see underwater combat return in future, but with much faster movement. The underwater evade, for example, needs to be the distance of evade distance+ just for the basic move. They could also integrate mounting into underwater combat to put further emphasis on verticality.
i liked the underwater battles, but i enjoy MH4U's idea of combat in three dimensions more than MH3's. It feels like less of a gimmick some monsters have, and something derived from the actual enviroment.

Ya know, I liked underwater battles, I really did. IN MODERATION. But I hated Plesioth and Green Plesioth.
You know what the problem was with underwater? The attacks. The attacks and movement speed (although I always viewed slow underwater movement speed as an environmental hindrance, and something that should be gemmed in to counter- that Olympic Swimmer skill or whatever it was called- it sped you up quite a bit and I always used it for underwater fights). But getting back to attacks- they were clumsy, slow, and poor for combos. ESPECIALLY the long sword. That's why I always tried to take dual blades underwater, that or a hunting horn for easy buffs and movement up buff- besides, swimming with a horn drawn was almost as fast as sheathed when you had movement up (unless you had Olympic swimmer).
If they fixed the attacks to be more fluent and not just forward jabs that don't combo, and kept the water shallow enough that you weren't completely looking up or down, and retained verticality on land (because I really love the verticality of Monster Hunter 4), I'd be totally in favor of underwater battles returning for the next entry.

Here's the newer size comparison video with all the MH4 monsters included. I remember the one posted a week or two ago that was included in MH3U. And this one is a lot better I think...

Actually the only thing i disliked in MHU3 was plesioth. oh god i hate that guy XD he's not hard, he's annoying. Rajang's hard and i love him, but plesioth... i love what they did to him in MH4U, demoted to a fishing minigame XD
