I finally finished High Rank of the Story(I didn't do all of the quests, but I got the credits rolling), overall I found it tougher than 3U's High Rank Village quests. If I had to recommend anything about what you'd need, upgrade your Canteen ingredients and bring plenty of Dung Bombs. It'll make your life easier in the 8 & 9 Star Caravan Quests.
Also I'll be hunting tomorrow if anyone wants to hunt together.
So where's everyone at right now? I just hit the 4 star quests on Palico Island (or whatever it's called, the one with all the felynes that you can recruit). This was my first day off work since the game came out, and I slept through most of it. Really digging the game though. Learning the insect glaive just because, how can anyone pass up such a unique and awesome weapon?! Can always fall back on hunting horn and long sword if need be though. Anyone using charge blade? How is it? I never liked SnS but this new charge blade seems pretty cool

I try to diversify, but I just can't not use the long sword. Switch axe was my main in Tri and then the long sword in 3 Ultimate. I find that monster hunter is a lot about building up instinct and learning a weapon really well puts you in that sort of instinctual rhythm. For instance, learning how to fade slash back, right, or left then use a spirit strike to lunge right back to where you were is all about timing. You have to practice that a lot to get it down.
True. Long Sword was also my main in MH3U (HH was my secondary, dual blades my tertiary) I know the long sword like the back of my hand. And I can definitely notice the difference playing with the insect glaive because I DON'T have all the combos down yet, and I'm not as efficient. Yet, that's what draws me. The fact I haven't mastered it, and well, the complexity of the weapon and leveling it up. And the perks don't hurt either- I mean who doesn't like mounting a monster at will (or better yet, springing into the air to swat an otherwise unreachable pesky bnahabara out of mid air).
My hope is that by the time I get to high rank, I will have some semblance of skill with the insect glaive. It's a fun weapon to use, and I remembered when I was first learning MH- the thrill of learning a new weapon and mastering technique- I guess I wanted to relive that again. And, the more mastered weapons the better, eh? Maybe one day I'll get the gall to try a gunner set. Or not.

Currently just got to HR 3 on multiplayer and I'm now working on the level 5 caravan quests. Couldn't agree with you more about the long sword, it has been my weapon of choice since Freedom Unite. But since the release of 4U I have started using the charge blade as my secondary and I am loving it's versatility coupled with it's raw power, especially after laying down a full shield charged elemental combo.
It's got a good feel to it due to the vial charge mechanics relating to me in the same sense of the spirit gauge. The two weapons are totally different but this mechanic made me feel at home using it.
I just got to Gore Magala. I haven't fought him yet, besides the short bit of fending him off from the Ace Hunters. I've been using the hammer, long sword, and switch axe, but I keep going back to the hammer. I love it. This is my first time playing Monster Hunter and I haven't done too much online or exhibition quests yet. I figured I'd start to focus more on that after the story part, but I'm looking forward to getting my HR up soon. I look forward to playing with some of you folks soon.
About to do the Gore urgent in the Hall. After that (and I get his armor/weapons), gonna continue the village quests...Got Zinogre, Rathalos, Queen, and Garuga to deal with next.
