Do you think Pringles will have a promotion with Nintendo, and use the 3DS to help promote Cheeseburger Pringles with the use of 3D portable trailers?

You can spin anything from something general

Fine, with Microsoft buying Skype,I'm sure they'll plug in their Zune players and Windows 7 Phones, and I wonder what will happen to the PSP app, or the iOS app which covers iPods, iPhones, and of course Macs. Skype is a pretty big company that can cover a large general area of electronics.

@BedCommando The topic at hand is the possibility of Skype for 3DS, not those other devices. Stick to the topic.

The official company line is:

Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

So 3DS Skype isn't out of the question

If anything, showing that it's on generally every other platform, one can be convinced there's a possibility of it coming to other platforms, like the 3DS.

I was wondering about this too.

@turtle Look up.

It would be a bad move if Microsoft were to cut down on Skype's supported systems. It wouldn't be worth it imo.

I was actually looking forward to something more along the lines of "wiiSpeak" with its animated mii. Even though it wasnt that successfull I could probably see it working better on the 3DS, intergrated with the Friend Menu and the Game Notes program. And its not as though you would have to fork out any real cash as you already have everything you need built into the 3DS.

Yes, I don't really care about the prospects of Skype on the 3DS as I'm sure Microsoft will find a way of squeezing money out of Skype users now that they've gotten their greasy fingers around Skype. I'd rather see 3DSpeak on the Nintendo 3DS as I liked WiiSpeak quite a lot. I hope that if there is to be something along the lines of 3DSpeak that it'd not simply limit you to using a Mii but also allow you to use your favorite Nintendo characters as was demonstrated in demos of Nintendo's DSpeak back when the original DS was launched.

Below are images to refresh your memory if anyone is unfamilar with that project.

This is just terrible Microsoft taking over Skype!

I think the fact that Nintendo fans were asking for Skype on the 3DS may have well been a factor in Microsoft acting quickly in buying Skype so that Nintendo would not be able to add Skype to the 3DS or get permission from Skype. And if Nintendo does try and get a contract with Skype to add to the 3DS well I bet Microsoft will try and make Nintendo agree to some pretty bad terms. That's one thing Microsoft did well to counter Nintendo, well its not good or us fans of Nintendo >.>.

I also have a bad feeling that Microsoft is going to have us pay for Skype! I just have the feeling, let's pray that doesn't happen. I use Skype everyday and well that would be a really bad blow to me and others who use Skype.

@Raptor78, that would be nice but! There are people who don't have the 3DS for example my friends do not have the 3DS, I have the 3DS but I can't talk to them because none of them have it so Skype would be nice, I use Skype everyday talking to my friends and well that would be a PLUS if Skype came to 3DS. And yes something like 3DS Speak would be great for the 3DS as well as Skype, I think both would work.

Don't make me cry Microsoft ugh plain evil!

Whoa, never knew THAT existed. Guess DSpeak was simply pushed to the Wii (so to speak).

I'm really holding out for a messaging system for the 3DS and maybe then I'll worry about Skype 3DS or whatever alternative Nintendo has planned if at all.

this is exactly how i feel. skype is awesome, free, and available for all sorts of platforms. If the 3DS got skype I could just cancel my phone completely and use my 3DS to get ahold of the few people I would need to get ahold of on their computer or ipad or something.

I bet they will have something, because at the E3 they were saying that the 3DS is suppose to be like the Wii so I'm betting they will have something like DSspeak. But I do hope they have Skype for the 3DS and I've got my reasons for wanting that.

@Squiggle55, Yeah you wouldn't need a phone at all. BTW just think what the phone companies would do, maybe freak out a whole lot. But yes I really hope Nintendo will get Skype on the 3DS.

Also If Nintendo doesn't get Skype, I hope they will get something like 3DS Speak and have it where you can contact people on laptops and desktops like Skype, that would be a lot of competition for Microsoft.

You're right, save for the fact that I've got a queer feeling that now that Skype is under the umbrella of Microsoft it'll be Pay2Talk. Let's just pray that it doesn't come to that. It'd brake me dear old heart to see my favorite talk app no longer free. Still, why cry over spilled milk? There is always Ovoo!

Wow, way to jump to conclusions. Believe it or not, Microsoft doesn't create all its business plans out of pure loathing for Nintendo and its fans. AFAIK them buying Skype has nothing to do with Nintendo. They wouldn't spend US$8.5bil just to prevent a gaming handheld from getting an unconfirmed, fan-imagined voice chat service. Not to mention that MS isn't competing directly with the 3DS since they aren't even in the handheld gaming market. Besides, eBay bought Skype a few years back and that didn't affect the service negatively at all.

Skype will never cost money for Skype-to-Skype calls. That's one of its biggest selling points and it would be an immensely stupid thing for Microsoft to do from a business standpoint. If it happened, they would lose all of their customers since there are many other free VOIP alternatives which work just as well. MS knows it's a competitive market. It won't happen.

P.S. I really can't view a company in good light when it uses ridiculous competitive advertising like "8 out of 10 Skype users prefer Oovoo". That's unprofessional and in bad taste. Also the milk isn't spilled (yet).

Wern't there rumours about Microsoft allowing Rare to make games for 3DS for the reason that they don't view Nintendo's handheld as competition to themselves? If this rumour is true then why not allow it?

There was an article floating around about Microsoft 'supporting' Nintendo's handelds (particularly DS) and how Viva PiƱata would gather interest for the X360 from people who wouldn't be in the first place. Even stating MS properties on PSP is highly unlikely.

Microsoft still has that mindset of bringing software to other platforms they don't consider directly in competition such as bringing MS Office to Apple's Mac platforms (even though Apple has considered MS' software 'uninspiring' but that's just business I suppose). I do question about Skype being on 360 as they already have a video chat app-thing but then again, Skype is awesome
