Instead of "choosing" the stages you're about to hop in SMG, how about flying between the planets in real time. That's how i actually imagined the concept in SMG originally. Of course, the hopping could still be fast, like it is between the smaller planets in each stage. This way any sort of map screen would also be useless, since the game would be open-world.
You know i don't think there should be a sequel of sunshine but I do think there should be a remake of it. I mean Mario 64 had it so why not sunshne? If it comes on Wii U as well, people are gonna get it and sales will also improve.
As long as the remake has new levels, more characters, new bosses, more shines to collect, mini games and other Mario 64 DS like additions (maybe even co-op like in 3D World), then I'm for it. Just don't make it a 'HD rerelease' with minimum changes.
Better than SMW? I believe that's impossible folk.
You seen SMW Central? Or some of the higher rated stuff from Mario Fan Games Galaxy? I'd say some of those projects have approached Nintendo's level of quality by now.
Maybe like Psycho Waluigi, according to a lot of people:
Or Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, to some degree:
And many hacks pushed the SNES further than Nintendo ever did. Like with... modern music on a 16 bit system:
What's a higher plane of existence than galaxy? Heaven. It's not too outlandish, considering he got transported to hell in Super Paper Mario.
Universe of course
On a serious note thought lets look where we have been with Mario. Mario 64 you where on land, Mario Sunshine you where on an island dealing with water, and Galaxy you where in space. So where we need to go is .... underground!
Story is peach fell through one of those massive holes and you have to go deep and deeper in the world to save her. Also with Mario Underground they can use the Wii U "U" for the "U" in underground.
There is also another possibility. Dimensions. Remember the Neo Bowser City course in Mario Kart 7? It's actually supposed to be a place where Mario actually failed and Bowser finally takes over as supreme ruler. That could be a very interesting twist if Mario pulled a Link to the Past/Between Worlds and had to journey through a dark and desolate Mushroom Kingdom where the Koopa King is in full control. And instead of the happy bright levels that are in most games, everything is sinister and threatening.
Perhaps too dark of an idea for an upbeat series like Mario, but it'd certainly be different.

Probably what mario would be like if he had only life...
I believe since the original mario story is...(dont know a word for it) complex?
It dont have many ways to go.
Therefore, the nintendo company runs out of ideas.
They did make a new villain. See every Mario RPG except Sticker Star.
And a Mario game with one life would be just too darn hard. Indeed, I remember playing a fan game/hack like that. Had something like 20 levels, bosses with four/five stages, no save points, no checkpoints and only one life before you had to start over. Was not exactly the most fun thing in the world...
I honestly noticed that Mario is starting to get boring while Sonic is just being too awesome. How times change.
Sonic is based on Mario only a little cooler.
But I never understood the critics hating on Sonic but loving the hell out of Mario! They even gave Sticker Star a better score than Dream Team while lost world is mediocre to them but they made an article of why slowing down feels a good thing.
I'm looking forward to the downloadable content of Super Mario 3D Land.
Problem is too easy never gets a downvote whilst too hard (Meaning reviewer has to put in greater effort to 100% the game - if they still do that) means it gets a low score.
Just making it so if you get hit at any time you always go to small mario (As in what you start at) or adding that as an option. (The first one and the lost levels had this mechanic).
Mario games I play as fast as possible. With Sonic you need to know the level a bit to do that otherwise you lose your rings all the time. (To me losing your rings all the time makes me feel that I am not playing it very well).
