I'd say Dark Moon. Maybe that's because the first game being non-linear meant nothing most of the time. I mean the original had some things that were better, but I cant say there was ever a time where I was disappointed as a fan of the original, barring maybe the bosses (and even those were still fun, if less original), and Dark Moon gets credit for just having so much more content that's on the same level. And an online mode that's better than it probably has any right to be.

also, unlike most recent Mario games, it had personality, which made me happy

To be honest, I think the mission system is a much better idea than the original games one. Why? Let me explain:

1. It lets you quickly replay useful/fun parts whenever. Like a puzzle? You can just select the mission with it. Want to refight a boss? Select the mission with said boss. The original game had the flaw of you having to replay through the whole game just to re experience a good bit, unless you kept copying and keeping backups of well set up save files.

It's why I've always wanted games like Paper Mario, Zelda, Mario & Luigi and Pokemon to have a chapter select system in addition to the main save file structure, to get round this problem. There's a good reason the Mario series doesn't have this issue.

2. It lets you change up the level structure more significantly, without it making the game impossible to replay/annoying. So for example, you can have half the mansion burn down in one mission, or have rooms blocked off/opened at different points, and you're then still able to replay the area as it was BEFORE the events happened. Makes the game more 'dynamic'. In fact, I hope the next Luigi's Mansion game takes full advantage of this, maybe with stuff like a haunted ship sinking in a certain mission or the mansion itself exploding after a certain mission. Or something.

3. Finally, it makes it more convenient than save points do. Always hated having to walk all the way to the boss 'arena' or new rooms from the foyer or somewhere similar.

I only think they could have put a "Free Roaming Explore the Mansion" after finishing the game, it's boring to go to missions to look for the extras like the gems..... other than that and the far more generic main music I found it as enjoyable as the first...

looking forward to Codename S.T.E.A.M.

1. The original had short length so that doesn't matter. The idea of the mansion is to have free exploration unless there are paths you can't go yet. Its not so tedious either because you can always use the mirrors with the game boy horror to go back to toad and save. In Dark Moon however if you lose once(Unless you have the bone which is rare to find) you have to start the level all over again making it a bit tedious. But to be fair you don't die very often in Dark Moon infact its the large levels where you will die.(The desert level in the third mansion is a pain).

2. While I do agree with the idea of appearing in one part of the stage to begin the mission, it doesn't happen very often. Infact most of the missions will put you at the starting point of the level itself. The only thing good about the pixellator is putting you into the boss room instead of going to the place to face the boss.

3. Ok I can agree with the lack of save points in the original but because the bosses are not that tedious(Well maybe with the exception of Boolousus.)
I don't find this an issue.

I'm not disagreeing with you here. I'm just trying to say that the original still is better than Dark Moon in terms of gameplay alone.

I just want a 2D Mario from Nintendo that is as good as the Newer mod for Super Mario Bros Wii.

It is almost like Nintendo have forgotten how to do 2D Mario's well.

To be fair, many mods and fan games have been better than the official games for years now. Just look at some of the SMW hacks and the SMB X games.

Instead of "choosing" the stages you're about to hop in SMG, how about flying between the planets in real time. That's how i actually imagined the concept in SMG originally. Of course, the hopping could still be fast, like it is between the smaller planets in each stage. This way any sort of map screen would also be useless, since the game would be open-world.

You know i don't think there should be a sequel of sunshine but I do think there should be a remake of it. I mean Mario 64 had it so why not sunshne? If it comes on Wii U as well, people are gonna get it and sales will also improve.

As long as the remake has new levels, more characters, new bosses, more shines to collect, mini games and other Mario 64 DS like additions (maybe even co-op like in 3D World), then I'm for it. Just don't make it a 'HD rerelease' with minimum changes.

Better than SMW? I believe that's impossible folk.

You seen SMW Central? Or some of the higher rated stuff from Mario Fan Games Galaxy? I'd say some of those projects have approached Nintendo's level of quality by now.

Maybe like Psycho Waluigi, according to a lot of people:

Or Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, to some degree:

And many hacks pushed the SNES further than Nintendo ever did. Like with... modern music on a 16 bit system:

Or Brutal Mario and just about anything...

He went to heaven in Super Paper Mario too...

He then killed the Mario equivalent of Lucifer/Satan and stopped a war between the 'forces of hell' and 'forces of heaven'.

Universe of course
Untitled

On a serious note thought lets look where we have been with Mario. Mario 64 you where on land, Mario Sunshine you where on an island dealing with water, and Galaxy you where in space. So where we need to go is .... underground!

Story is peach fell through one of those massive holes and you have to go deep and deeper in the world to save her. Also with Mario Underground they can use the Wii U "U" for the "U" in underground.

There is also another possibility. Dimensions. Remember the Neo Bowser City course in Mario Kart 7? It's actually supposed to be a place where Mario actually failed and Bowser finally takes over as supreme ruler. That could be a very interesting twist if Mario pulled a Link to the Past/Between Worlds and had to journey through a dark and desolate Mushroom Kingdom where the Koopa King is in full control. And instead of the happy bright levels that are in most games, everything is sinister and threatening.

Perhaps too dark of an idea for an upbeat series like Mario, but it'd certainly be different.

Avian fact of the week: The Moa, an extinct relative of ostrichs and emus that inhabited New Zealand, was the tallest bird that ever lived at 12 ft tall (3.6 m). It was also the only known bird to have no wing structure.
