Nintendo Power on two ways to play:

Nintendo Power wrote:

To go along with the new touch-screen controls is a gameplay enhancement that takes advantage of the N3DS system's gyro sensor. Holding the system flat forces the camera into a mostly overhead view of the court - typical for tennis games. If you put the N3DS in a vertical position, though, the camera shifts behind your character. From this point of view, you aim your shots by simply moving the system left and right. While playing in this Dynamic View mode, your character will automatically run to where the ball is approaching, leaving you free to choose your shot and aim it properly. Not having to worry about reaching the ball means casual players will especially benefit from this mode. It's also worth mentioning that the N3DS automatically turns off its 3D capabilities while in Dynamic View, as the frequent movement of the system would disrupt the stereoscopic effect.

Nintendo Power on character classes:

Nintendo Power wrote:

There are 13 characters available at the start of Mario Tennis Open. Each one has a special attribute that will affect how you play as him or her. The information here will help you pick the character that's best for you.
ALL-AROUND
Beginners will want to start with these characters. They have no particular strengths or weaknesses, but they're well-balanced and easy to control.
EXAMPLES: Mario, Luigi

TECHNIQUE
These characters have great control over the ball, allowing them to easily hit it to the back of the court, where it is difficult to return.
EXAMPLES: Peach, Daisy

SPEED
If you want to get to the ball fast, these are the guys to choose. They're not particularly strong, but they can move around the court with ease.
EXAMPLES: Yoshi, Diddy Kong

TRICKY
Skilled players can make good use of these characters. Their ability to hit wild curve shots can confuse unprepared opponents.
EXAMPLES: Boo, Bowser Jr.

POWER
These are the "big guys," and as you might imagine, they're plenty strong. They'll send the ball flying back to your opponent.
EXAMPLES: Donkey Kong, Wario, Bowser

DEFENSE
As a defensive player, Waluigi can reach balls that would be out of range for other characters. It's tough to sneak a shot past his lanky limbs.
EXAMPLES: Waluigi

In addition to the many Mario-universe characters, you can choose to play as your Mii. This personalized character doesn't have any predefined skills, so it's up to your natural abilities to win the cup.

Seems pretty interesting. As long as it isn't just normal tennis, I'm good. If I want normal tennis, I'll get Virtua Tennis or something

Why do people point to their wrists when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?

If it has Mario in it, you'll know it'll be insane, lol

I love Erica (Strike Witches), Eureka (Eureka Seven), and Tenma (School Rumble), stay away from them. xD
Update: Also love Yukari and Mizore from Rosario + Vampire.
Another Update: Also Yuuki...from School Rumble...

I miss using the controller pak (gosh I can't remember the name of it) that went in the back of the N64 controller, to put my GBC character I worked so hard on, on the big TV. That was pretty cool about 13 years ago or however long ago it was (I was like 9 or 10), and I think it would be pretty cool now.
The GB one was a good game on it's own too though.

In the interview in Nintendo power, the producers suggested characters from the Pokemon series like Pikachu would be a perfect fit for Mario Tennis if there was an outside franchise to be in a Mario Tennis game. However, I'm wondering why Golden Sun characters can't make an appearance in the game as a guest...

Also, there seems to be loads of customization options in the game (in regards to your Mii). They built this game like they would a console game which is why there is no RPG mode, but they have thrown in RPG elements (different rackets, clothing, etc).

It's shaping up to be a promising game. Good news is that they were trying to make it as close to the original N64 version vs the Gamecube even though it's loosely based off of Power Tennis.

Haha well, there were Golden Sun-esque inspired Power Shots in the GBA game. Thought that was neat.

Am I the only one who liked the power shots in the Gamecube game? It made it more like what I would expect from Mario sports games. Like Mario Baseball and Mario Strikers (Soccer / Football) have power shots. It made the characters more unique, oh well.
