Man, the nostalgia goggles are grafted HARD on people's faces over this game if an incredibly minor thing like not letting Luigi walk in front would completely ruin the game. The original will always have it's own charm with it's distinctive art style, but I'd trade that in a heartbeat if it means better balanced mechanics (a combination of low hp enemies accommodating players unable to pull off high level Bros. Attacks, making said Bros. Attacks dirt cheap to use, Mush Badge and Great Force meant players could easily paste anything encountered in the original).

I always have Luigi in front whenever possible in the GBA game, and yes I was very disappointed when I couldn't do it in the sequel. Sorry for being silly like that.

So the soundtrack's been leaked... Cackletta really likes her pipe organs. A standout for me was the addition of bells to Joke's End, giving it much more oomph.

Checked out some of the leaked music myself. Though I limited myself to the enemy battle theme, the standard boss battle theme and the minigame themes, I like what I heard. Apparently, the final boss music wasn't remastered very well but I won't know until I play the game myself.

@AlexSora89 Eh, most of the music in Superstar Saga is repetitive to some degree, and short to boot. Yoko did a good job of making the most of what music there is wihout fundamentally changing them. But they still don't hold a candle to later efforts.

@DreamyViridi I don't really get the poor reception to that remix in particular, it's always sounded a bit subdued to me. Maybe they could have done without the organs this one time, but otherwise I like it just as much as the original.

It sounds a bit off. The bass/guitar thing is too low, and it kinda carries the main melody.

@meleebrawler
I think the remade soundtrack definitely counts as a later effort. I spoiled myself the new version of Bowser's Castle and... well, now we know what the main instrument was meant to be: a violin.

Anyone familiar with Yoko Shimomura's use of violins knows what this means.

I don't quite have lots o' loot, because I'm from the Boot.

I get an email advertising this game.

It asks me if I have fury. Especially due to Fawful.

@Haru17 I couldn't disagree with you more there. Yes, pixel art has it charms (see Zoombinis). But modern 2d art AND well done 3d graphics look so much better in my eyes. I'll take a game in the style of Windwaker or Super Mario Galaxy any day of the week over something like Superstar Saga. Not to mention, pixel art scales HORRIBLY whereas modern 2d and 3d don't have those issues.

@Snaplocket Way to necro my message. I haven't posted in this thread in like a month, dude. I don't remember what I was talking about!

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

@Haru17 I was talking about your post where you said there was no better art then pixel art.

Pixel art tends to age better than 3D models.

But it's mostly dependent on the art direction.

Basically all the old games that used prerendered art look awful now. Just like how realistic 3D tends to look awful a few years later.

@Meowpheel I've seen plenty 3d and pre-rendered games from the old days that still hold up very well.
If you ask me, 3D looks just as good and ages just as well as 2d. (lots of old 2d games don't look very good nowadays)

@Snaplocket That's not what I said at all. I was talking specifically about 2D art and I never aaid pixel art is the best, I think something like Muramasa is probably the best a 2D game can look.

Of course this is all in the context that I like 3D games over limited 2D ones, even visually. I was just talking about 2D because this thread was about a game remaking some of the best pixel art.

@Haru17 "Some of the best" is kinda a stretch in my eyes. Yeah, it looks pretty good but it doesn't hold a candle to the sequels in my opinion. My bit about 3d graphics was aimed mainly at meowpheel.

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga DX + Bowsers Minions looks perfect.... except for the needless removal of the Flight Suit Koopas. Never going to get over that.

meleebrawler

@Dev 2:58 "I'll finish this with a Bob-omb!" Throws regular bomb.

Jokes aside, the variety of minions available is pretty surprising. I don't think we've seen Bomb Boos in anything outside the Galaxy games. Have to wonder, though... if you can recruit Koopalings there, where does that leave the ones fought as bosses in the main story? Replaced entirely? Or were they fakes all along?

Brainwashing.

Just because you can recruit them it doesn't mean they can't be brainwashed again for the boss battles with Mario.
