so the Mario RPG series that reached its peak on the first sequel and been on a odd streak of out of place changes(Super Paper Mario with that gameplay, not bad but weird, and Sticker Star's lacking story and gameplay) meets the Mario RPG series that reached its lowest point in the first sequel and has been improving greatly ever since
in other words, potential best Mario Game of All Times if done right.
and the greatest pile of dung if done wrong.
since I love risky bets all I can think about it is:

This looks absolutely amazing, I love it. So long as they don't dumb down the progression to Sticker Star territory (and it's Mario & Luigi, why would they?), this looks like it might be my favorite of both series.

I find it silly how many people think Sticker Star will negatively influence the game so much. I think they've forgotten why the game can be considered mediocre in the first place (though personally, I rather enjoyed it). The two main reasons why SS gets some flak is because of the lack of "a true story" and "RPG elements" (battles were fine but basic stuff like exp. was missing); but this is a Mario & Luigi title.

The RPG elements are there, as we've already seen, and with any luck, so will the story and plot. Chill. If anything, SS and the whole PM series may influence Paper Jam positively. For starters, the game already embraces the "Paper" concept (like how SS did via graphics and NPC self-awareness) and has the option to "block" attacks in addition to jump/hammer countering.

I really need to look into this, I haven't been able to do an E3 catch up yet .

I've been meaning to try the Mario & Luigi series, starting from the GBA game, but I'm guessing this one will be slightly different....

Not by that much, since we controlled more than just Mario and Luigi before with the second game (which is on the Wii U's VC I think), one new thing this game introduces is the papercraft battle, though.

Ever since the first game, lol. But Alpha Dream does put special battles from time to time to shake things up, probably the main reason I love the last two games. The giant battles were so memorable and fun (except the train), and Dream Team also has the dream battles...but they were all still turn-based.

Paper Mario always had those, though. That was its thing.

I know but blocking attacks is a first for the Mario & Luigi series of games. In Paper Jam, for now at least; you press X to block against attacks. You can still jump and hammer to avoid damage altogether, which makes that feature redundant; but maybe there'll be enemy attacks later on that can't be avoided.

You could block attacks in Super Mario RPG...as well as the first Paper Mario.

A fair assumption to make. Looking at footage, it seems to apply to Mario & Luigi as well. The option to block appears even when attacks are aimed just at the Bros., though I've yet to see the animation for it. See 5:54 in this video.
