I just picked up the last Professor Layton, and all the others in the series (the first four ds were under 50 bucks all together used) and was wondering what the best order was to play them. When I had my first 3DS I played about halfway through Miracle Mask and loved everything about it. Unfortunately our screen got damaged and we decided to wait for the new 3DS instead of replace it.
So.. should I play in release order, or chronological order?

i would play curious village first and the newest one last. the games improved dramatically after the first so you may not like it as much if you play it latter. the most recent last to avoid spoilers. the others anyway you want. oh and avoid the anime. it's really really bad.

Wait, you mean the Eternal Diva movie? That one was actually pretty cool, albeit flawed on its logic, of all things.
I really appreciate the input! That was my dilemma mainly, following quality (as they appear to get better with each release) or follow the timeline. I'm pretty excited to play through this series.
Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.
It doesn't really matter, so long as you follow chronologically within each given trilogy, as there are story connections (this is especially true of the prequel trilogy). Curious Village might be awkward to play if you've experienced the entire prequel trilogy, though, considering how much more complex and involved the narrative of the prequels are as compared to the charming but very simple story of the original game.
Each game has some subtle improvements over the last, so I would strongly recommend that you play them in the order that they were released.
1. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
2. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (U.S.) / Professor Layton and Pandora's Box (Europe/Australia)
3. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (U.S.) / Professor Layton and the Lost Future (Europe/Australia)
4. Professor Layton and the Last Specter (U.S./Australia) / Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call (Europe)
5. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
6. Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
I didn't mention the crossover as it doesn't officially fit in any particular place in the Professor Layton timeline. It was released before Azran Legacy in Japan but after Azran Legacy internationally.
