I also think the Lightning gets really annoying. Especially when you're in the air and it makes you fall. I've lost countless races because of that

Double Coin in Super Mario Kart.

Thunder Cloud gives me a boost and can shrink an opponent, the feather/leaf in SMK can be useful for shortcuts or to jump into an impenetrable square in battle mode, the blooper is at least annoying to your opponents, fake item block is better than a banana peel, fire flower has a short range but can be devastating and the tanooki tail can take out a heap of opponents if you are in a tight spot and is good for defending.

Double Coin? Unless you're on zero coins and are freaked out about being spun out it's totally useless. Regardless of what place I'm in (except maybe first with the blooper) give me any of those other items over a Double Coin any day.

Exactly. One of the very few items that actually takes skill to use and when hit, is 100% your fault.

Too bad everything else is an unbalanced nightmare.

I don't really hate any in particular... but I hate it when, on the third lap, im way ahead of everyone and then i get lightning, 3 red koopa shells, and hit by starman, and blue koopa shell AT THE SAME TIME... c'mon Nintendo, the items were put there so 8th placers could occasionally win, but thisgoes to the point where it isn't fair anymore. Nintendo, FIX THIS!!! Also , it's really annoying to get hit by blue koopa shells 3 times PER RACE...

The most blue shells I've been hit by in a single race currently stands at 4! That was on Toad Circuit

Eight placed players should never be given an item that lets them win. Letting them catch up is fine but not winning. And that's where the skill in Mario Kart is omitted. (You know, giving the last place player an unbalanced item.)

MARIOKART IS NOT A RACING SIMULATOR.

People complaining that MarioKart is unfair crack me up. It's a party game. If you want a "real" racing experience look elsewhere. It's a game set up to give as many people as possible a chance to win any single race. Over time, the best racers win most often anyway.

Do you guys complain about dice when playing Monopoly as well? Look at items in a similar way. It interjects luck in the game to make it more fun for everyone...unless you're looking for a race simulator, of course.

Lol, Mario Kart actually takes some skill, yes its an arcade / party / kart racer, but its not just luck.

No it is not. It's a Party game that thinks it's a racing game. However, that doesn't excuse it from being cheap. Super Smash Bros. is a Party game that thinks it's a fighter, yet it's actually fair most of the time, so why can't Mario Kart? All it has to do is get rid of some cheap items, change its AI so they don't cheat, and maybe restructure what Items it gives out and when. Wipeout and Blur have Items, too, yet they somehow figured out a way to make them fair and fun. I personally think Nintendo could learn a thing or two from them.
