Level-5 has announced Lady Layton for the 3DS and mobile platforms and is set for a 2017 release. See the trailer:

Looks really interesting (although the puzzles seem to be lacking in diversity, but maybe that's just me). Obviously the biggest change in this new episode is Lady Layton, whose name is Catriel and is Professor Layton's daughter. She seems to have two sidekicks; a talking dog and a boy butler. And there's also a talking... uh, parrot.
I hope the game's localized versions are already in the works. I can't wait to hear more about this game.

@Vee_Flames I've been really interested in the Professor Layton series recently, but haven't played a game yet aside from vs., if I can find the previous games then I'll probably pick them up and this one too eventually, but I want to play them in order.
Looks like her name is something like Catriel and she is the daughter of Layton. While I'm not familiar with the series, I know Luke can talk to animals so I am suspecting that she may also be able to do so which is why the dog talks.

@Kazuo I did hear that her (Lady Layton's) name is Catriel, but I certainly didn't know that she was the daughter of Professor Layton! That's pretty cool. Awesome, actually.
And it'll certainly make more sense if Catriel has the ability to hear animals speak... although I was digging the idea of animals conversing with the people. Professor Layton can be a bit... whacky at times, so yeah.
If you're looking for a game to start with, try playing Miracle Mask first. I started with Curious Village but I think Miracle Mask is more accessible for players who are just getting into Professor Layton. I haven't played Azran Legacy so I'm not sure that one would be even more accessible. Which ever one you start with, one thing's for sure; you'll have a blast... if you like solving puzzles, that is. Especially hard ones.
EDIT: Made some changes to the first post.

Why is it starring Layton's daughter? Did something happen to Layton. If this delves into spoilers can you just explain it to me with only spoiling mild elements? I've never really played any of these games.

@Ultimategamer132 Well, after five or so games I think it's time for some new blood. Since the game was just announced I don't know what happened to Professor Layton but it's safe to assume he got married (even after losing the love of his life... it'll be interesting to see who Mrs. Layton is, then) and had a daughter.

@Vee_Flames thanks, I will see if I can find some of the DS games first though, but I think I will probably pick that up. I should probably work on finishing vs. as well soon.
Also for those interested, the dog's name is Shallow and the assistant's name is Noah. I'm not the best at spelling names from Japanese to English or vice versa, but Noah's last name is something like Montol? Montor?
Japanese spelling is モントール (Montōru)

I'm certain the professor is alright though since near the start there is a woman speaking to Catriel who says that she had called for Professor Layton when she sees Catriel.

@Vee_Flames

I do agree. I hope Level-5 can pull off making another wonderful protagonist. That cut-scene with his love was heartbreaking (I know how/kinda why she did what she did and what happened).

@Kazuo I transliterated the dog's name as "Sherlo/Sherlow", as its Japanese name (シャーロ) is a contraction of the Japanese transliteration of "Sherlock" (シャーロック), which I'm pretty sure was intentional. But I guess it's all just speculative until we can some official information in English.

I think my favourite name of anyone is Detective Inspector Darjeeling Aspoirot, who is appears to be riffing off Agatha Christie's "Poirot", but... with a more of a tea influence.

Oh, the official English title has been announced and some more information has been provided.
It is called "Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone's Conspiracy"
http://gonintendo.com/stories/262328-lady-layton-the-milliona...

And someone has translated most of the trailer as well (make sure subtitles are on)

@Kazuo Haha, in the non-translated trailer I had a feeling Albo (the talking dog) was telling Catriel to let him into the basket during that huge iron ball chase. And I was right! Speaking of Catriel.... if she's accusing a bird of a crime, then the story is probably bonkers. Just like other Professor Layton games, I guess.
If the professor is alive and well, then hopefully we'll get to see him in the game. I'm predicting he'll be in the game to dish out post-game puzzles (which will be extremely hard to crack, of course).
Also, there's the tag "Layton Series" above the name of the game (which should be simplified in the English version lol). Judging by the nature of this game, then it is likely more games will be coming our way in the future. I don't think the Professor Layton-Luke-Altava trio will be at the forefront anymore, though... maybe the series will be used to develop Catriel Layton as a unique character of her own.
Lord, I can't wait to play this game.

I'm certainly intrigued by this one, to say the least. I've only just started playing the Professor Layton games (in release order) and am in the middle of Diabolical Box. So far I love the series, though some of these puzzles throw me for a loop. XD

Is the second trilogy also worth playing?

@Kazuo The poster of the video is still taking contributions, so if you've got any suggestions, please let them know underneath the video! I think the trailer is still some way from being translated with perfect accuracy, though I applaud to poster for getting some sort of subbed video uploaded.

I think they've left some of the more obscure, strange, specific, and generally hard to parse sections with slightly 'hand-wavey' translations currently. As in, they don't really get down to the specifics of what is being said, but instead give as reasonable alternatives, given the context.

One bit I suggested should be changed was at 2:45, where the previous translation was, "someone was killed underneath the legendary bird". I believe the poster mistook とおり for とり, and thus derived the sentence, "伝説の鳥に人が殺された" (under/to the legendary bird) rather than "伝説の通りに人が殺された" (according to legend/as the legend stated). They've taken it on board, and the video has been amended (assuming my translation is correct), but I think there's still room for refinement.

One part that I believe has been glossed over - and that I'd like to hear your thoughts on - are the references to the hands of the clock on Big Ben (or rather, the clock tower which houses it - apparently Big Ben refers to the bell rather than the tower itself).

From 1:50 onwards, what I hear is "つまり、時計の針は巨大なモナカで作られていたのよ", "そんなわけねェだろう!", "確かに、モナカと思われている成分が検出されていますね".

Which I'm pretty happy to translate as:

Katrielle: "That is to say, the hands of the clock were made from enormous monaka"
Sherlow: "How could that be right!?"
Noah: "It's certainly true that components thought to be monaka have been detected".

Which is all fine and dandy, but... what on earth are "monaka"!? It's not an mishearing, because the trailer clearly spells "モナカ" out is big letters but the only translation I can find for it is this wagashi, which is basically a bean-paste mochi sandwich.

If the game is asking us to believe that the hands of Big Ben's clock are made out of Japanese bean-paste filled sweets, then I'm inclined to side with the dog, "How could that be right!?"

@Maxz I'm definitely far from fluent, but I will see if there is something I can contribute.

As for Monaka, I have no idea. I've searched things about Big Ben, Monaka, Monaca, but couldn't find anything that seems like it could be of relation to this. I'm guessing it could perhaps be some made up of some sort of made up material or something? But I have no idea at all to be honest.
... Maybe I should travel to the UK and taste it
Since I haven't played a Layton game, I don't know if there are perhaps references to it either in previous games.

@Kazuo Yeah, I think your theory that it's some kind of significant material in the Layton universe sounds most plausible at the moment; something which potentially gives of some sort of signal or 'radiation' (which would explain how it had been "detected").

I've played a few Layton games (I'm currently in the middle of The Azran Legacy) and the series is quite fond of making up concepts/objects with peculiar names that are said to hold some specific power or importance. I'm not familiar with 'monaka', although the fact that the trailer singles it out ("ビッグベンの時計の針はモナカ!?") indicates that the audience is expected to recognise it.

I'm going to London on Saturday. It's a bit hard to get up to the clock itself, but I'll have a look and see if I can spot any adzuki bean paste dribbling down the sides.

Failing that, if I can find a Japanese forum, or somewhere where people would post their reactions to the trailer, then that might bring some clues.

This 'monaka' thing is a riddle all in itself...

@Vee_Flames Yes, that's the certainly the sensible choice. It's like watering the plants when there's rain forecast; no matter what we do, it's going to be done and done better without our input.

But still, it's kinda fun! Untangling something that genuinely needs untangling is very satisfying, and it's obviously nice to find a practical use for something that you've spent a lot of time practicing. And in fact, translating the trailer (or trying to) is excellent practice in itself, as well a rare opportunity to work together at translating something with other people; bouncing ideas back and forth.

And because it's so new, there's the satisfaction similar to that of stomping through fresh snow; you want to lay down bootprints before anyone else! Eventually, the snow will melt, and all beneath it will be revealed, but until then, let's enjoy this crunchy, stompy sensation!

I'm looking forward to comparing our interpretations on the Japanese trailer with that of the English one, when it arrives.

Also, I just want to say that I love how the dog seems so contrarian and uncooperative. Maybe I'll get sick of it, but it makes a nice change from squeaky-clean Luke Triton and his boundless Layton worship.

@Maxz Hm, I certainly understand where you and Kazuo are coming from. It is indeed satisfying to make sense of something and actually be right later on. Reminds me of a lot of puzzles from the Professor Layton series. Heck, even your whole translation project is like a puzzle that Layton is just dying to see whether he is right! Unfortunately I'm not the most fluent in Japanese so I can't make sense of anything but I do hope that your endeavors do not end in vain.
And who can blame Luke? Layton would be my role model if he was real. Heck, he's my virtual role model.

I'm glad they're not abandoning the Layton format. I also really like that they're not remaking Professor Layton and are, instead, simply continuing the series through his off-spring.

Glad this is targeting 2017 here in the States.

@Trinexx Second trilogy is stronger than the first, in my opinion. The games are much more closely connected and feel more like a single, interconnected story than the original trilogy. TONS of backstory for Layton and Luke as well.

Why can the dog talk?

Possible Plot Twist: Lady Layton is not actually Layton's biological daughter. She was sired by Luke and raised by Layton for whatever reason. As such, the dog isn't actually able to talk in human speech. Rather, Lady Layton inherited her father's ability to talk to animals.
