Topic: L Button not working (HUGE AND WEIRD UPDATE)

The L button on my 3DS does not work at all- I am going to send it to Nintendo, but I do not like the fact that I will be without it for a few weeks. Is there anyway to fix it without sending it to Nintendo?

UPDATE: 4/18/12 So I haven't played a real game on my 3DS in a while because of this problem. But I wanted to play MK7 today so bad that I popped out SM3DL and put MK7 in, just to do a quick Time Trial, even without mushrooms. So I was doing the TT, and I hit the L button by habit, and it WORKED. So then I tried this L button thing on alot of different things, like Colors and Zen Pinball, and it's working! That's awesome and all, but is this permanant and why did it magically fix right when I put MK7 in? Was SM3DL sabotaging my 3DS somehow?

For a very temporary fix, close 3ds. Create a firm seal around the L button with your mouth. Blow air onto 3ds button, being careful not to spit on 3ds. It should work now for a little bit, it cleans out the button. Try this a few times, if it doesn't work at all then send it to Nintendo.

I suggest sending it to Nintendo to ensure that it gets fixed, otherwise, if you do it yourself, you may only make it worse.

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

NO!!!!! Evidently it has begun. All my prior DS systems had their shoulder buttons break, and I felt certain that they'd fixed it this time. But if yours is broken, it's probably just the tip of the iceberg again, and we'll all start having trouble eventually. >

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

This is a normal problem with DS consoles; it happened to my DSi. I sent it in, they fixed it, end of story. Same goes for your 3DS. The few weeks of waiting will be worth it in the end.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Well I had these problems when I fliped the top screen of my DSI back and forth but like everyone else said, you'll probally going to have to send it in.

Kid Icarus and Mario Kart have made their breakage inevitable.

My L button is feeling a bit loose, or something. Definitely not as solid as it was on release.

I've loved all my DS systems, but this has been the one flaw that never seems to go away.
It happened with my DSi just a few months after I bought it, and it eventually happened to my DS Lite, although it was years before that happened and I already had my 3DS when it did so it didn't cause big issues.
I'm really hoping the shoulder buttons on my 3DS can last at least until a newer model comes out that I really like.
I'm avoiding sending it in for the scratches on the top screen because I can't bare to go without it for a few weeks but if a shoulder button goes too then I'll be forced to.
I'm also a bit worried about the durability of the circle pad.
It's still holding up well, but I've only had it for a year and every now and then when I first start a game it'll get a bit stuck.

Try cleaning it first. The nintendo site actually has instructions on cleaning the 3DS and for buttons recommends using a clean toothbrush. My R button wasn't working and I was certain it was broken but all it needed was a good clean and I haven't had any trouble since.

Here's a the link: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/3ds/en_na/ts_system....

This worked when the blowing air method failed by the way.

DARN IT! So I have to start blowing in the buttons agin... sigh oh well, better do it every now and then if its already working to prolong its defect.

My L button isn't sticky or stuck: It feels fine, it just isn't responding.

Well, thanks everyone for the replys. I guess I have to send it to Nintendo. I will hate being without for a few weeks, but I know it'll be worth it.

Sorry, mine wasn't sticky or stuck either. I didn't realise you could copy the address for the cleaning buttons page so I just used an address that had a link to that section. If you haven't already you should try cleaning it properly first, you may not need to send it in and there's nothing to lose by trying.

The shoulder buttons on one of my systems started to fail to respond and the blowing trick worked. They eventually did pretty much stop working, though (noticed it the most on Mario Kart) so I swapped them out with the buttons of a spare system which were working fine.

Interestingly, the ones which failed are a lot more "clicky" than the ones which are working. Seems at some point Nintendo switched components.

I tried cleaning it just like on the website, still didn't work. I'm gonna have to send it it, I guess.

This happened with BOTH the shoulder buttons on my dsi and it is beginning to happen with my 3DS L button. Before the shoulder buttons went dead on my dsi, if I pressed really hard they would work for alittle while. I think you better send yours to nintendo.
