I've had 2 instances of needing to repair my launch model cosmo black 3DS. One was mundane, the other was unusual.

Last September, while playing Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, my 3DS dpad and touchscreen suddenly stopped working. I think it happened soon after I fused "Sarasvati", a low level demon in that game. Recalibration was impossible, because... it needs to be operational to be recalibrated! I tried using DS games, but it perpetually moved down and left, as if the dpad was held down. I left the 3DS alone until January, then finally sent it in for repairs. Nintendo's repair shop replaced the motherboard, lower lcd, and touch screen for free! I never did find out exactly what happened...

This April, I slipped on water, and fell directly onto my right hip. My 3DS broke my fall, and I broke my 3DS. The outer shell was impacted, the inner screen was cracked, and the image was shot. Yet, the lighting still functioned, even the speakers! I only weigh about 140 lb/63 kg, yet this happened. I sent mine in for repair; the 3DS was barely still in warranty (got it April 2011), so they charged $30 less! It was still $65, down from $95, to replace the upper lcd screen, "screen cover", and "main front housing". At least my 3DS saved me from injury!

I ordered my Flame Red 3DS from Amazon, and it was listed as being in new condition. Can anybody inform me if there are any tell tale signs it's still factory sealed and has never been opened before? Like should there be a clear sticker over the tab that opens the box containing the 3DS?

Is the 3DS certified "Fulfilled by Amazon"? At the time of this writing, only about 5 are left in stock.

There is either 1 clear sticker on the opening tab, or 2 clear stickers on both sides of the opening tab, which should be untampered; there is no clear sticker on the tab (at least for North American 3DS). The cardboard flaps that pop out should be immaculate. When you open the box, the quick-start guide and streetpass info is on top, with the manual just below it. The 3DS should be fitted snugly in the cardboard packing, packaged neatly in a styrofoam pouch, with an unwrinkled styrofoam slip in between the screens. For the earlier models, that slip is good for preventing smudges from the circle pad, as well as scratches from the lower screen edges touching the top screen.

Be sure to inspect the back of the 3DS, it gets scratched and smudged VERY easily; the serial number code should be clean and flush within the small indentation it's placed in. An empty 2 GB blue Toshiba regular size SD card should already be inserted into the SD card slot. The stylus should feel rigid; this is fine, it will smooth out over time. The IR rectangle, battery charge port's gold connectors, and the screws on the back of the 3DS should all be immaculate.

When first turned on, the 3DS should ask you to adjust the 3D settings, calibrate the touch screen, and input screen name and time/date. The wireless switch should still be turned off. The battery should be at or near full charge; the 3DS battery drains very little power while turned off, especially compared to Sony devices like the PSP.

Sorry if this is a bit much!

@GreenDream, thanks for informing me so thoroughly. To answer your question, no, it was not ordered from a seller who offers, "Fullfillment by Amazon". I did contact this seller with a few inquiries, though. Which will be retained by Amazon for future reference. The seller replied to my inquiries, informing me that this item is in fact still factory sealed and has never been opened, returned, refurbished or reconditioned in any way. Those emails will also be kept in Amazon's record's for future referrence. If my 3DS doesn't arrive in the condition it has been described to be in, I can always ask for a return shipping slip and file an A-Z claim with Amazon. Once again, thanks for answering my question so thoroughly @GreenDream. I'll be sure to treat your answer as a quality checklist of sorts, when my 3DS arrives.

About the clear stickers, this applied to only some boxes; I had one clear sticker over the opening tab of my launch cosmo black 3DS box, other people on "unboxing" videos have also had either 2 clear stickers on both sides of the opening tab, or already removed the stickers. In particular, one flame red North American 3DS unboxing video on Youtube, from last Christmas, had 2 clear stickers on either side, which the person cut. I will edit my above post.

Yeah, it kind of irritates me that my ambassador, day 1-purchased 3DS feels like a bulky, clunky, barely-put-together DS phat and my nephew's that he got for Christmas feels more slim and sleek like a DSi. He also doesn't have the screen scratch issues from the touchscreen touching the top screen that I have. Nintendo won't fix it for me either (even though its under warranty) because they say screen scratches are not covered, even though it's a design flaw in the earliest models.

Are you sure? They fixed it for me in 3 days.
