Hard to say, both have awesome libraries but I might give the edge to the 3DS due to big titles like FE:A, Animal Crossing:NL, the 3 Zelda titles(OoT, ALBW, MM), 3D Land and Smash Bros. DS has an incredible library though...

I'd argue that it blows the DS out of the water. The DS always felt like it gave a watered down experience. Games were always simpler 2D experiences

I can't fully argue against this but the difference in quality of the first year of both systems is so ludicrously biased towards the DS it's impossible for me to take you seriously.

It's so hard for me to decide as they both represent different times in gaming...

I don't own a Wii U yet so the 3DS, in some ways, has been my only "current gen" system, even though there isn't really a split between the last couple of generations. It has totally kept me happy with so many AAA titles, genuine AAA titles, I mean let's be real, this thing is better than the PS4 and Xbox One and will always be unless they seriously get their act together. As someone without a Wii U, the 3DS has still satisfied almost every Nintendo need I've had.

The DS games all satisfy your retro and throwback needs with amazing updated titles based on classic, classic formulas. It also had it's fair share of very unique titles. I think the DS perhaps had more unique titles that really made use of how new the design and technology was, but the 3DS has had to compete more with touchscreen mobile gaming and as a result we've seen "better" (as in more closer to console) games on the system.

Went out and bought one a New 3DS yesterday. What's a good game on the 3DS? Animal Crossing looks fun, I remember playing it on Wii and thought it was so fun and it reminded me of MySims on Wii in a way.

You're representative of why I think the WiiU is selling badly. It isn't because people who don't buy WiiU prefer buying a ps4 or a Xbox One. It's because they can have all the big Nintendo games on 3DS for a cheaper price. I think Nintendo changed their handheld policy with the 3DS and released on it a lot of big AAA games with the same content as home consoles games. Which is relatively new since most games on Nintendo handhelds until that were "lite" versions of home consoles games with less content or levels. The 3DS and the WiiU predate the same audience and it hurts one of those systems.

I-U

My experience with the Nintendo DS library blows my experience with the 3DS library out of the water. I'll be honest too, I hold it against the 3DS library that there has yet to be a Metroid and WarioWare game from Nintendo there. Metroid Prime Hunters is my favorite game of all time right now and WarioWare Touched! and D.I.Y were both titles I had a lot of enjoyment with. Both are DS games. Not to mention that I still don't have a personal copy of Metroid Prime Pinball, so I could still have that fresh Metroid experience out of the Nintendo DS.

One thing I don't particularly like either is that the 3DS and the Wii U clash a little too much. New Super Mario Brothers 2 vs. NSMBU + NSLU, Smash 3DS vs. Smash U, 3D Land vs. 3D World, Mario Kart 7 vs. Mario Kart 8...For the most part, I've just lost interest in most of these games because they were so close to each other. The exception is Mario Kart 8 because it is an exceptional game, my favorite for the Wii U. I really haven't played a single retail 3DS game more than 50 hours, and considering that I have owned the 3DS since its release, it's a little sad. There have been 3DS games I've wanted to replay, like A Link Between Worlds, but I haven't gone back. The 3DS just seems absent of the love and magic I saw in much of the DS library, which had a lot of fresh ideas taking advantage of the hardware.

The DS had fantastic third party support that really got me interested in games beyond Nintendo. Moon, Dementium, Dementium II, ATV Wild Ride, Sonic Rush, GTA Chinatown Wars...all games I really liked playing. I think besides a couple of the 3DS's fighting games, SSFIV3D and Dead or Alive Dimensions, and Code of Princess, 3rd party on the 3DS hasn't really pulled me in. That puts my expectations all on Nintendo's shoulders, much like with the Wii U, and they just haven't been able to nail either system yet. With the exception of Mario Kart 8, I've been wanting to play GTA Chinatown Wars again more than any Nintendo game on either the 3DS and Wii U. There just doesn't seem to be that title with much spirit or depth behind it yet. third party or first party.

I'll admit - my average DS playtime was much higher. I do have a couple exceptions, though:
I've logged an absurd 162:21 in pokemon x (mostly in fishing/breeding while doing something else), and 54:42 in Resident Evil Revelations.
The vast majority of my 3DS titles are under 10 hours played, and most are smaller eshop titles. Of my top 10 games (not counting eshop and browser), 2 are still DS games (Pokemon Conquest and Heartgold).

Depends. DS had a much wider variety of games in its library. I would argue that the 3DS' JRPG and first-party lineup is stronger, however, which is primarily what matters to me.

IMO, The DS and 3DS are pretty even on which is better...

The DS has many selling points.. with generally more games, simplier to use, nostalgia, etc.. whereas the 3DS has better quality games with more features and possibilities with eshop and graphical enhancement of previous titles.

Realistically, it would be unfair to say either console is better, when what really matters is what games you enjoyed playing and which console that game was for. Like I said, the main thing that puts DS over 3DS is solely nostalga, the good old times we had when we were younger and technology wasn't as complicated.. we just don't have nostalga for a console we're currently playing, only the games we may play on it.

Enjoyed nintendogs for the DS lite? It's on the 3DS too, but you enjoyed more on the DS cause to you, those were the good old days, where your best memories took place. Liked pokemon diamond? Well, again you just enjoyed those good old times.. now we're just a little more advanced with some game mechanic changes, they're still pretty much the same turn based strategy RPG.

Anything in 3D (the dimension, not the visual gimmick) is better on the 3DS because, c'mon:

The first party lineup on the 3DS is much better than the DS, but the DS had a very sizable quality 3rd party lineup when you avoided the shovelware. The 3DS doesn't have as much shovelware, but 3rd parties aren't there like they were on the DS. It just isn't there.

That sounds about right to me. Does anyone know why this is? The only long-running 3rd party franchise the 3DS has done better with is Resident Evil, as far as I can tell.

The 3DS simply hasn't sold as well as past Nintendo handhelds so most publishers have focused on mobile instead.

Which is quite weird, because obviously 0.5 million copies sold on 3DS means something while that could be a horrible failure on mobile. It's obvious that there's a niche that isn't being filled, and not that many indie devs are doing 3DS development.
