Topic: Is the 3DS as good as the DS days?

I received a black DS Lite back in 2008 and it was amazing. I remember playing Pokemon Diamond like there was no tomorrow. I remember throwing a frisbee to my nintendog then him running away after a week of inactivity and being like wtf. The DS was the best handheld in my opinion, with so many great games and options. I stopped handheld gaming in mid 2009 and went over to modern platforms like 360, ps3/4, etc. But I really miss the DS days, and I've noticed a new and improved 3DS has arrived. I don't know how it stacks up against DS in terms of fun and amazing games though. I suffer from amblyopia so i will not be able to see the 3D effect, but its not really a buying point for me. Luckily an oculus rift game is coming soon that will alleviate my amblyopia over time and i will be able to perceive 3D for the first time and I can enjoy the 3DS. But lets get down to it, is the 3DS as great as the DS was? Are the amazing mario/pokemon games there? Is it a must own? P.S. I own a Wii U as of now

It's getting there. There are a ton of games not to mention many indie/smaller games you can download. Also it can play NDS games for even more games.

I think the DS has a more diverse set of games across all genres I am interested in.

Standard modern 30fps problems only exist on the 3DS.

Hard to judge. 3DS has the eShop, the DSi shop wasn't that great. Because of the rise of digital releases, physical releases have slowed down but digital releases are much better than DSi days, which were only 2ish years of the DS

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

DS had an awesome catalog of games. The 3DS is lacking but if someone bought a system today, they'd have plenty to choose from. For me there's about 15 core 3DS games that are a must have for the system. That's not a lot but it will keep someone busy for a while lol.

I totally hear you, I loved my DS lite back in the day. I had gameboy colour and advance SP, but something about the DS lite just made me love gaming. games like pokemon pearl (my first with the console), final fantasy and dragon quest just were there for me for hours and hours of game time.
The 3DS is amazing in my opinion. I think of it as a newer DS lite- it serves the same role the DS lite served for me pretty well. I do play older games from time to time (actually playing dragon quest IX and pokemon white 2 at the moment), and due to the larger screen and the option to replay those old games on the newer system I get the best of both worlds, old and new.
I say- go for it! and besides the new and amazing titles, if youre itching to play something old, you can always do it =]

3DS has plenty of awesome games. From 3D Land to Kid Icarus Uprising, the Pokemon games aren't bad either. It just got a remake of an awesome N64 game and a port of Xenoblade. Also...MONSTER HUNTER!

You guys must have defective 3DSs or something because mine plays DS games just fine.

Better Zelda's, eShop, kid Icarus, an original 3d Mario, sega 3D classics, virtual console, luigi's mansion, portable smash ..... It's a better handheld experience for me. Screw SquareEnix support.

You won't regret buying it, but its line-up is not as good as that of the old DS.

Imo I prefer the 3DS' line up, too many of the DS' big games just don't appeal to me and the similar ones on both platforms like Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei, Zelda etc I find are better on the 3DS with the only expectations being Professor Layton (I don't like 3D modelled Layton!), Pokémon and Mario vs Donkey Kong.

There's around 20-40 really great full/retail games on the 3DS so even if the DS' catalogue is better you'll have enough to keep you occupied.

Naturally, while I haven't played nearly every game on either system, I think from what I have played, I like the 3DS more.

In favor of the 3DS, I think Zelda: OoT3D was better than either of the DS Zeldas. Kingdom Hearts 3D is better than either of the DS KH games. Fire Emblem Awakening is better than Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. Tales of the Abyss is better than any JRPG I played on DS (which includes Suikoden Tierkries, Lufia: Curse of the Sinestrals, & Nostalgia). Super Street Fighter IV 3D & Dead or Alive Dimensions are types of experiences I really didn't get on DS. I didn't have anything like Ace Combat: AHL, Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater, or Samurai Warriors: Chronicles on DS either. Also, it has the eShop, which is much better than my DS Lite, which had nothing of the sort.

In favor of the DS, I actually found myself playing NSMB more than SM3DW. I liked Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story more than Paper Mario: Sticker Star. I haven't experienced games like Ace Attorney Investigations or Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword on 3DS (yet).

Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

In my opinion, it's not as great as the DS, or probably even the GBA, but it's still okay.

I wouldn't say probably better than GBA but yeah, its a bit underwhelming in terms of DS quantity. But the 3DS is still awesome nonetheless. I just hope they make a Metroid game for the 3DS just so I can be satisfied with the library with just that coming out to the 3DS.

I had both a DS Lite and DSi. Also have a 3DS. And to tell you the truth I have more 3DS games than I ever had DS games. I prefer the DS Brain Age games to the 3DS one. The only thing I like more about the DS Lite is that you can play GBA games on it.

Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword

Tough choice for me. While I'd been into gaming for a long time before the DS, it was around the time of the DS's launch that I started reading gaming magazines and buying my own games, so the DS holds a special place in my heart. As well as that, the DS had some of my favourite games, including the Ace Attorney series and Trauma Center.

However, the 3DS has really picked up after it's slow start, with a good library of games now. While it has a lot of ports, I like having certain games on a portable console, such as Xenoblade (Majora's Mask being my favourite game helps too.) it's original games are great too, with games such as Fire Emblem Awakening and Bravely Default. Seeing as how 3DS also plays DS games though, 3DS is my preferred console.

Yes, I like bears.

Went out and bought one a New 3DS yesterday. What's a good game on the 3DS? Animal Crossing looks fun, I remember playing it on Wii and thought it was so fun and it reminded me of MySims on Wii in a way.

I'd argue that it blows the DS out of the water. The DS always felt like it gave a watered down experience. Games were always simpler 2D experiences or shoddy 3D experiences with graphics arguably worse than the N64.

The 3DS has a library of deep console-quality games and an eShop filled with supplementary smaller games.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

3DS is all right, but the games aren't quite as interesting or varied as the DS' lineup.
