When you look at the likes of Spiritomb, the notion of Game Freak going through artist block doesn't seem so astounding.
When it comes to Pokémon and artist's block, I think of the entirety of Generation 5. They created so many new Pokémon at once, by what I believe was a different team of designers(?) and then forced them upon you for the whole game... Not only were the new Pokémon not only no good, but you HAD to use them.
On the topic of a potential Pokémon home console game, I'd say that if one was created, it would have to be something that would only work on a home console, whilst keeping the spirit of the handheld games. I always hoped for some kind of massive game that beared resemblance to the anime, with large, unique towns and a sense of exploration. You could play online with a group of friends, like Ash and co., choose a partner Pokémon... Just anything to make it feel personal and unique. You could even choose multiple routes through the game, either by literally going to different places, or by choosing a different 'profession' to play as instead of a Trainer. It would certainly be fit for a home console, and I would give it all of my moneys!
Honestly for the game series, it might be best to make the next game a home console version of Pokemon.
Exponentially higher production costs, lower sales especially in Japan, less opportunity for conventions and tournaments, and loss of social aspect.
Nintendo doesn't want a million grown men sitting at home playing Pokemon by themselves. They want 10 million kids playing it in classrooms. The key to the series remaining relevant is visibility.
Some of that is true, but I think mixing up the design of the game could do good to get new ideas flowing into the series. Designing for Home Console would be a different. Instead of designing the game around smaller play times they can design around longer play times. Instead of having to design around a sometimes connected internet, they could design around you always being connected to the internet. You won't get the Pokemon MMO on a portable system that isn't always connected to the internet.

The only issue I have with a home console "core series" game is where they can go with it...
You can make an online interactive style game, however what are you going to do in that game? Hang out? Battle? You can explore, however, you can't make it too huge to the point you get lost in it during online interaction. ORAS's secret bases got close to it, with the secret bases being implemented in each other's game.. but as far as players coming in and battling/catching other pokemon and players, I can't see the turn base element working out in a more real time strategy game.
I've always wanted the "partner" pokemon thing back from HGSS, however the issue I have now is how weird it'll look. Back then it was just sprites so they didn't seem that realistic.. however in the case of colosseum, XD, or etc, they keep their sizes relatively accurate (shortof) to their dex sizes. Think of it this way.. picture the wailord model from XD/colosseum following you around? Wouldn't work out. Then there's other pokemon like binacle and clawitzer that appear to have little or no mobility (dugtrio atleast digs). There would have to be pokemon completely incapable of being "partner" pokemon for this mechanic to work, which seems rather sloppy and incomplete. Rumble world you can say were just toys and move like toys, but in the case of live pokemon in a real time online strategy RPG, it wouldn't look right. You can resize wailord and make horsea or whatever hop around.. but for clawitzer, binacle, and sharpedo it seems wrong...
But then again we do have dugtrio still used in battle against pokemon found during soaring..
Take the size of the environments and sheer amount of quests in XBCX give it a pokemon spin. subtract dolls, add a GOOD storyline and customizations to both yourself and the pokemon and voila...profit?

On top of that, there were a lot of 5th gen Pokemon that were heavily inspired by older Pokemon and filled similar roles. So yeah, 5th gen definitely felt like artist's block.

I think trying to make a whole new Pokedex worth of Pokemon is a bad idea. New regions should be used for some new Pokemon and possibly bring new light onto under used old Pokemon.

I still don't understand the mentality of gen 5 pokemon being artist blocked. IMO they are some of the better designed pokemon given to use.
Klink line looks dumb? Magnemite+magneton wasn't exactly innovative or well designed as an evolutionary line. Only magnezone seemed like a well thought out designed pokemon from the evolutionary perspective.
The genies look the same? The gen 4 pixies look even similar with only facial redesigns... and unlike other trios, the genies did something new in having new forms indivigually.
Volcarona? Fiery moths are awesome, the idea of a moth that utilizes it's wings to represent the sun and was based off of seraphs seems really well designed and thought out. (just looks weird flying around from a 3d perspective).
The box legends, IMO, were the only weak points of the 5th generation and seemingly an artist block.. they didn't have much to work with since they already covered elements of life.. anti-matter, time (also celebi), and space. Weather balance and control. Just being a strong pokemon (mewtwo). Mental manipulation (darkrai's bad dreams). Feelings (shaymin). Ancient ancester (mew). All these things may the likes of the muskedeers and zekrom/regi mediocre.. not to mention their lore and purpose doesn't make sense... is mewtwo or kyurem the strongest pokemon? Make up your mind anime!
Plus the generation was a change, something we've been complaining about pokemon for.. being the same old stuff. When 5th gen came out they did everything completely different in making us see new things and new pokemon instead of geodude and zubat in every cave and used by every villian. Sure it was an easy walkthrough with the straight path, but personally I enjoyed that as it made relaxing and just playing the game much easier rather than worrying about carrying around a useless water type from the first pond you see just for the HM. You could use your favorite pokemon without worrying about utility as much.

Oh sure, they replaced the usual bats and rocks with different bats and rocks, that's real innovative. It's not as if that's the only species of Pokemon they can put in caves, I can think of several animals that could fill the cave areas. Earthworms, bears, spiders, if they were really creative we'd see some of these in caves instead of Not Zubat and Not Geodude.

Cubchoo, and joltik were seen in certain caves..... tynamo isn't exactly an earthworm but close enough. There weren't that many caves to say they didn't include different pokemon, however it wasn't all bats and rocks from previous generations that hog up teamslots from opponents. If I wanted to battle geodudes I would've played red/blue/yellow.. IMO that's what GF should focus more on, the current generation they're working with, not past gens, and that's why I felt x/y was kinda sloppy with the huge pokedex as gyms and trainers used like new things and more old, been there done that pokemon.
I'm sure onix and geodude were the best choices in gen 1, 2, 3, 4, and to a much lesser extent 6 over something new, regardless of similar design. Even in gen 4, all we got new that we found in caves was a chimecho prevolution, and bronzong. Everything else was medicham, machoke, geodude, gravaler, onix, steelix, and golbat..

Except, like with Geodude and Zubat, we saw Woobat and Roggenrola in almost every cave in the game. So in that respect it's the same situation.

XY may not have been very balanced on old vs. new, but at least the dex itself was varied. You never really saw the same Pokemon over and over because there were so many to choose from.

It's not so much that they should stick with the same Pokemon over and over again, but that it's such a waste of a new Pokemon to recycle an older idea instead of exploring brand new ideas. 5th gen would've felt a lot more fresh if it were full of entirely new ideas instead of tons of knock offs.
I wish they'd do a WiiU game like the olden days. Pkmn Colosseum on GCN was a huge step in the right direction, but what happened next on the Wii was a disaster, it undid all the good stuff from GCN & N64. I always thought for sure they'd do a console RPG like how the handhelds get but clearly that won't ever happen now. Pokken Fighters is cool I guess, but obviously not even going to be anything too similar to what we've really had.

I know, I thought Colosseum and XD were awesome games! I loved the fact that it had a different, yet still recognisable 'feel' than the main-series games, and did something properly different! From the looks of things, Game Freak probably won't be going back to that style, unfortunately.
Although, I will say. I do really want Pokkén Tournament in my life. Surely they'll port it to the Wii U, right...?

I think Pokemon is doing fine. Yes the sales are down a bit, but come on, Red and Blue were the outliers here. They were right in the midst of Pokemon being some massive fad that expanded their appeal beyond many normal gamers. Of course any later games would sell less.
Heck, the same situation happened to Mario. Super Mario Bros 1 sold about 40 million copies, Super Mario Bros 2/3/World/whatever sold between 10 and 20 million. Fads of the time had to do with that too, once the NES 'saved' gaming (in North America), the later games sold at great but not ridiculously high rates.
Really, the sales of Pokemon are simply reaching a sustainable 10-20 million a game rate. Like Mario. Or various other long running franchises.
As for what should happen now... nothing. Mobile games might do well, but the profit margins are so low on them that Nintendo and Game Freak would have to load them to the rafters with cheap 'freemium' stuff to break even. 20 million people paying 50 dollars a game is a much better return than say, 80 million people paying a single dollar each.
