I'm going to counter /your/ anecdotal "evidence" with /my/ anecdotal evidence. Everyone I know is suddenly playing Pokemon all the time!
Because you're burnt out on it, everyone is? And you don't think new, younger fans who haven't played multiple versions of the same game won't come along? Come on.
Pokemon Is nowhere near it's end, and this is coming from a guy who has only played Puzzle League and those free ones that just came out. In other words, not a Pokemon fan.
Source is outdated. Nintendo reported over 13 million sales as of last December
Nintendo reports shipped units, not sold. Anyway, my point wasn't to make XY look like bad selling games. Forget about XY if you want, the sales peaked during the first generation, and it probably won't reach those number again anytime soon. That being said, I don't think Pokémon is going to dissappear in the coming years.

Either way, 12.75 million in sales of any piece of media in this day and age is an unqualified success, especially on a single platform and the competition involved, and a property that's 20 years old.
Excuse me @the_shpydar China didn't conquer us, the US and China formed a superpower known as the Alliance
But that's a different thread (which I just searched for, and surprisingly a Firefly thread does not exist )
Hang on. I thought China had gone on to be the resistance folk and that was why they kept swearing in Chinese. So where did the brown coats or whatever they were called come from?

OK, last thing on the topic, because I'm a tad confused about what's going on. What is this Firefly of which you speak, and does it bear any relevance to Pokémon? I'm presuming not.
Y'all have to remember, every Pokemon is some kid's first one. It may be the end of Pokemon for you, if you are starting to find the series stale, but it isn't the end of the entire series.
And this is a very important point. My first Pokemon game was Blue way back in 1998. My little sister's was Y in 2013. Pokemon is like Star Wars in that the appeal is cross-generational. It's getting old enough now that people grew up with it, and now their kids are being introduced to it because it's still popular.
I read like 3 post in this thread and it looks as bad as the aegislash retest thread on smogon right now.. which is pretty bad!
Anyway, no the franchise isn't coming to an end yet. @bolt_strike and @amiibo's points are pretty much what the issue here is. Those who are playing pokemon are mostly veterans from past generations.. and the traditional formula is just getting stale , and in some cases, we find any new innovative additions (like megas) to be gimmicky or unappealing.
Then the younger audience is pretty much glued to CoD, phones, and other stuff nonnintendo related. Nintendo is trying really hard to appeal to this audience when instead the audience really buying and playing their games are older players who just seen it all for a long time.
There's another theory in that the competitive community is killing the franchise as well, I remember when I used to have casual battles against player during gen 4.. but now it's everything is enforcing highly competitive play which some, just simply put, are unappealed by. The number of players today are just so much into enforcing specific rules (smogonites) that casual players can't really enjoy the game for what it is without being bashed by someone. Not to mention there is 0 reason to buy the cartirage games when so many emulators and similators like showdown! are present.
Pokemon isn't coming to an end, just the playerbase. Which is hurting nintendo. (I'm surprised nintendo didn't shutdown showdown! yet.. not sure how that case would work.)
To say something other than how silly the idea that something as popular as Pokemon after 20 years will just...end...
It's amusing to me how people find the series stale. "DUR IF ONLY I COULD CHOOSE WHAT GAMES TO BUY INSTEAD OF FORCING MYSELF TO BUY POKEMONS". Ok, cool. Love Pokemon, haven't touched the series since Soulsilver. When I get back into the series I'm just gonna laugh at everyone complaining that they bought the same thing again and expected something new at this point. I was too busy playing actual new games that you'll never get to play and then probably finding B/W for like 10 bucks at most.
