Topic: Is now a good time to buy a 2DS?

With the announcement of 'NX' - whatever it may be - only a matter of months away, I'm a little hesitant to take the plunge for a DS.

I'm only a casual gamer, so I won't be purchasing the latest titles thick and fast, but I'm mostly interested in the Virtual Console and Mario titles. And then of course there's the announcement of Pokemon R/B/Y! I just want a handheld for travelling with on the road.

From a comparability perspective, do you think that a handheld 'NX' will support existing DS/VC titles?

My second question concerns the eshop. How much are the VC titles on it per platform?

Now is as good a time as any, really. And no, the NX is not months away. It is at least a year away, and even then, I wouldn't expect it to be released until 2017.

We don't know what NX is at the moment, but rumours suggest that it will be a hybrid system that will act as both handheld and home console. At the moment, Nintendo has not told us anything and anything that anybody else suggests is merely speculation.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

I personally think the NX will be a portable but that's just my take on it. Even if it's not I think it's fair to assume that the 3DS is past its peak. Though I wouldn't let that stop you from diving into this generation of portables. With tech in general there's always going to be a chance for something better a few months down the road. That's just the risk you have to take. Because if you don't take that risk you will always be waiting.

And even if they do release something better and you only get a year of having the "newest thing". There's nothing stopping you from enjoying it for a bit longer. Odds are that the next thing probably won't have much going for it for the first 18months or so anyway!

Is there a reason in particular why you chose to go with the 2DS?
The most recent system is the New 3DS and the New 3DS XL.
If you want it all and the best handheld currently available, go for those models.
They don't have many exclusives compared to the regular 3DS/2DS models (only Xenoblade and Binding of Isaac so far), but are the most powerful, have some convenient extra-buttons and a better 3D-effect.
I also think you should stick with a 3DS or New 3DS due to its smaller size (at least the regular models fit in your pocket, the XL versions only if you are wearing baggy pants ;-]. But the 2DS is supposed to be pretty alright if you don't want the 3D effect and can live with the strange door-stopper-design.
The library is generally great.
Since nobody knows for sure what the NX is all about and when it will arrive (it was even announced that it won't replace 3DS or Wii U, but who knows), there is no real use in waiting for it for one or two years.
And even then: the library of a new console tends to stay pretty empty for quite some time, especially if you are picky regarding to genres.

If I got one it would be to play 3DS games and 3DS VC games that aren't on the Wii U. I'm not interested in 3D unless it's essential to play certain games. The format of the 2DS looks okay to me, but my fear would be that it might be less compatible.

Thanks for the responses!

@Tiefseemiez, I'm leaning towards the 2DS as I won't be using the 3D functionality. Plus. it just looks a lot more comfortable to hold.

Another thing I wanted to ask was eShop pricing. Is there is a vast gap between the RRP and retail prices?

Well, the eShop pricing is a bit strange.
Usually first party retail games are more expensive on the eshop than in stores.
You will find a lot of gems on the eshop and there are new discounts every week, but Nintendo games never get discounted (almost at least, there were very rare exceptions).
Atlus on the other hand is a publisher (at least in NA, less so in EU) that sometimes makes you wonder how they can afford to give such huge discounts so frequently.
(In EU this regards their eshop-only games only, their regular retail games don't usually get a discount; in the US this used to happen pretty often)

A 3DS system is all that you need to keep you entertain with a lot of available Mario platform games: the Super Mario Bros and Land series (NES/GB/GBC VC), the Wario Land series (GB/GBC VC), Super Mario 64 (DS), New Super Mario series (DS/3DS), Super Mario Land 3D (3DS), the Mario VS Donkey series who provide classic Mario arcade games (DS/3DS and DSi/3DS eshop), Super Princess Peach (DS, it is NOT a girl game), Yoshi's Island DS (not up to the SNES one, I know), the Mario&Luigi series if you like RPGs (DS/3DS), maybe some others I forgot and the numerous mutliplayer games using Mario characters. The great Super Mario World episode (SNES) is also playable on 3DS through some tweaks but it is illegal of course.
I would advise you to get the 2DS but it is not very practical to travel with. With that matter in head, just go for the old 3DS if it is still available in shops. If else, only the New 3DS can satisfy you despite its still high price.

Nintendo could go for a backward compatibility for the e-shop like they did on the WiiU for the Wii and the 3DS for the DSi, they could also try to gain some buyers by including backward compatibility with the previous generation (like they usually do), but I'm sceptical about the possibility to still play DS cards on the next portable device if there is any. At most, it will recognize 3DS game cards and that's all.

I am sadly not allowed to visit the e-shop anymore ^^"
After a fast NitendoLife check, prices seems to be as follow: 4.99€ for a Famicom or Game Boy Color VC game and 4€ for a Game Boy VC game while the Mario VS Donkey e-shop titles cost 8€ for the Dual Screen one and 19.99€ for the 3DS one.

Not sure why this was mentioned, but there's also the excellent Minis on the Move for 10EUR.

@Emperor-P, I'd say you'd definitely get your money's worth, especially since you're primarily interested in the 2DS, which you can snag for under £100 (with a game and extras: http://store.nintendo.co.uk/nintendo-2ds/consoles.list). Most folks agree that we won't be seeing the NX, whatever it ends up being, until late 2016 at the earliest. Hell, the average console game costs £50; if you can get a 2DS with a game for £80 without any sign of Nintendo's new system for at least a year, why not?

I'm a casual gamer too and I ended up with a 2ds. At the time, I wanted to be able to play ds, 3ds and VC games and didn't have much of a budget. The 2ds isn't that bad. It reminds me more of a traditional gameboy with extra buttons. All in all I find it not too uncomfortable though the positioning of the ABXY buttons are a little high for me and my carpal tunnel. I also find the D pad a little squishy and I love the position of the stylus.

Travelling isn't too terrible either. I got a little sleeve case with mine and it's no big deal to slide it in and throw it in the backpack I carry as a purse. Sometimes it's inconvenient because I would just like to stick it in my pocket. If you are a dude, might want to consider the 3ds. If I could do it again and had the funds, I would probably go with the original 3ds. I like to be super portable lol.

All in all, the 2ds is a good unit if you're on a budget. It's solid, gets the job done and people seem to either love it or hate it. I don't think it's amazing but I don't think it deserves some of the hate either. I've enjoyed playing through Super Mario land and SML2 and am currently playing through Harvest Moon 3. Plus some newer games. If you can get a good deal on one say, on ebay, I'd go for it.

Just wanted to throw in my two cents. Hope it helps
