Topic: Is Mario Doomed?

Someone cheer me up a little because Miyamoto's retirement is affecting me a little seeing that Nintendo has lost a lot of money for the Wii U and still needs to cope up with it. And if Mario ends up like Sonic for a while, I may get upset. I am a fan of both Mario and Sonic but I play a little more of Mario games than Sonic.

was their any Mario game besides the Wario, DK and Yoshi series that Miyamoto wasn't involved in?

short answer: nope, Mario is not doomed, Nintendo is in a good financial shape

Miyamoto isn't very active at Nintendo anymore. I doubt he has had a big influence on the past couple of games. It'll be sad when he's gone, but it won't affect the games much from what they are right now.

Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

Mario has been doing fantastically these past couple years and the same people who made those games are still making the new ones today like 3D World. Just because 1 man, Miyamoto, isn't going to continue working in Mario, doesn't mean the whole franchise will be ruined. He barely contributed much to the past installments, and its only because he trusts the team who develops Mario now. And they really have proven themselves worthy of that with the games they've made.

I feel like this just means that Miyamoto will be giving his time to projects other than Mario... **cough**new IP**cough**

MIyamoto stepped back from Zelda in the same way around the time of Majora's Mask and it's done pretty well since. He'll still be around for quality control, so I'm not too worried about it.

it's all right, (I think) Miyamoto-sensei wouldn't retire if he didn't think the people handling it were capable enough!

That was the last truly exceptional one for me.

The rest have just been good but not that good.

^We'll have to agree to disagree. It's been rocky more recently, but otherwise I thought the series was still great even after Majora's Mask for a while.

There aren't a lot of big companies capable of being as incompetant as SEGA, as far as I've seen. I doubt Nintendo would go down that route unless something majorly catastrophic happened.

Exactly. I highly doubt Mario of all franchises will go down the drain.

Games I'm playing currently: Legend of Zelda: A Link Betweeen Worlds, Tearaway
Games I'm excited for: Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. 4, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8

Considering Miyamoto ruined certain Mario games or made them worse (like Sticker Star), the series might be better off without him. It would do the series a lot of good to have some freshness invoked into it, and perhaps new developers is what the series needs.

Seriously, Mario is doing great nowadays.

You realise that the crucial factor in the demise of Sonic was Sega's departure from hardware development. As soon as Sonic games became multiplatform Sega didn't have to worry so much about his image, because Sonic is only selling software for Sega now, whereas before Sonic was most definitely selling hardware as well. Sega got lazier with him, not to mention they were developing his games on hardware that they themselves had not designed, so they were less intimate with it.

None of these factors are happening with Mario. Miyamoto is just one man out of many who plays a part in making Mario games what they are. Trust me, Nintendo have enough good people to make good Mario games without him. The day I'll worry about Mario is the day that his games stop being exclusive to Nintendo systems. I hope that's a day I never see.

Are you serious?

In the last few years, we've had New Super Mario Bros 2, Paper Mario Sticker Star (as much as I dislike it), Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, New Super Mario Bros U and others, and we're getting Super Mario 3D World and Mario Party Island Tour, and you think the series is doomed?

It's not going the same way as Sonic. Especially given how most of the previous Mario games in recent times have been very good, and 3D World looks amazing.

@ClassicSonicFan Did you have to quote them pictures? :3

As for Mario failing... it is most certainly possible but also incredibly unlikely. Mario is Nintendo's bread and butter, all of their other series are just icing on their Mushroom Kingdom cake (baked by Peach), they would never let anything catastrophic happen to their mascot. I hardly doubt they'll do a SEGA, or Capcom, by ditching their mascot.

Unfortunately, Mario games seem to be getting into the rinse and repeat cycle and people are starting to realise this. Hopefully 3D World will be enough of a change to appease everyone.

While Miyamoto is brilliant and one of (if not the) greatest minds in the video games industry, we need newer people who'll be more willing to include stuff like online multiplayer in their games.
