Playing Advance Wars 2 again made me abundantly clear that it's the better series. At least for me. At least in those days, I can't judge newer FEs I haven't played (well I can, I just want to try to be honest ). I think I finally figured out my big reason for preferring Advance Wars, in that permadeath clearly hurt Fire Emblem's ability to have specific types of levels that you have to figure out. You can't be too specific for how to win a level in Fire Emblem, because if the type of unit/s it's made for are all dead, you'd be screwed. You can't make a good...I dunno, Mage level if you have one Mage and he died. Where as playing levels where you're given specific units means the levels can be built entirely around that, which is so much more interesting and fun and varied. And then it can have levels where you can just build units until you win or lose, so it's allowed to be both more or LESS limited depending on the map. They can do whatever they want!

For me it's an easy choice - I have liked every Advance Wars in the series, while every Fire Emblem I tried got thrown out the window almost immediately. I really tried to get into it because, you know, it became one of Nintendo's main franchises almost overnight, so I figured - it had to offer something interesting.
But I was turned off by almost everything - the language, the characters, the setting, the dialogue...

It's incredible to think that Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are so similar in nature, yet to me one is a perfect example of videogames done right, and the other is a perfect example of videogames done wrong.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

Personally I have no interest in the series, but I still think this would be a good idea for Nintendo. It's odd that they made two games for the GBA and two for the original DS and then just dropped it entirely when the 3DS came along. I think a lot of fans would be happy if Nintendo brought this series back.

I read a long time ago that IS decided to concentrate on FE on the 3DS to cultivate its growing popularity in the USA.

Can I ask any of the veterans how good Advance Wars gets then? I played the GBA original for about half an hour but didn't really get anywhere and I own Dual Strike. Only played a few missions. It only seems OK at the moment though. Not seeing where this supposed metacritic 90% is hiding. Does it keep getting better or am I just not into it?

For me, I would prefer AW over FE. In a way, it is a simpler, less stressful game than FE IMO. With FE, I am constantly stressing over keeping all my characters alive whereas the units in AW are not unique and therefore, I don't have this need to keep it alive. Another is that I think AW has way more charm than FE. I love the artwork of AW. It keeps it light. I like the interaction between the COs and the story is told better.

Same here. I'm ready to pre-order right now!!!

As for the 3DS it will never RIP with so many great games to play on it. There's more than a dozen lifetimes of gamehours in all those awesome titles (including DS games, of course).
