Random unrelated question: Why is stuff in Japanese magazines like the Circle Pad add-on reveal in Famitsu written in English ("Secret Scoop!")? We don't have Japanese writing in our American mags.

because Japan likes random Engrish for no reason (maybe something relevent to post-WW2 Japan, I dunno?). To be fair, it's still far superior than when english anime fans say KAWAII BAKA DESU.

Because English is their second language and apparently the Japanese language doesn't cover all words.

Keep in mind, the American English dialect commonly uses French and Spanish words too

Most Japanese people know a few basic English words. In magazines and the like, using English works like bolding and setting the font size to 172: It stands out.

But no, English is most definately not a big language in Japan.

And as LZ said: think about words like "cafe," - English is filled with words that aren't english at all. :)

@WaltzElf True... I wouldn't want some psycho running around with a loaded gun shooting people. But I wouldn't want to know someone who's just married his/her fridge...

I can see it now:

Vicar: Do you thou take this cooker to be your unlawfully wedded wife?
Man: I do.
Vicar: Do you thoua take this man to be your unlawfully wedded husband?
Cooker: ...
Man: Oh sorry, I forgot to plug her into the wall...
Vicar: Do you thou take this man to be your unlawfully wedded husband?
Cooker: ...
Man: C'mon honey, say "I do".
