The fact that they have a scoring system causes enough trouble anyway.
Why wont review scores just die... -.-

Because, flawed or not, people like them.

And the reason why they like them? So they can skip to the bottom of the review and completely disregard what the reviewer said about the game. That's the sad truth (not that there aren't valid uses for review scores).

Actually, that is a completely invalid use. You may as well not be using anything at all if all you're gonna do is look at the score. I'll admit, I'll skip down to the conclusion sometimes, but only so I know what to look for when I skim through the rest if its something I know too much about or don't want to spoil.

The score attatched to a review gives a concise way of summing up the game's quality when compared to other games on the system or within the genre.
That's what I think, anyway.

I'd say not everyone has time to actually read reviews, but those same people have time to complain about them so...

But that only works if they're all reviewed by the same person, and even then, how do you measure what arbitrary number accurately reflects your feelings for a game? How do you get it right every single time? There's plenty of variation in standards even with one person, and of course they don't adjust the scores for how the reviewers feel about the game years later unless they rereview it. Once you've thrown in multiple people, the entire thing breaks down, since now you have people who may have completely different tastes and standards coming up with a score.

And that's not even getting into the fact that the scores don't give you the context, the reasoning behind why they chose to give it that score. Because a number with no context is just a number. If you're actually trying to use a review to determine what games you might like, and all you do is look at the score, maybe even comparing scores, you're no better off than shaking a magic 8 ball and doing what it tells you to do.

All a score represents is some vague idea of about how much the reviewer might have liked it at the time. No matter how hard anyone tries, it'll never anything more than that.

Normally I just look at the score for a game unless i'm interested in buying it soon, then I like to read about the game and see what reviewers say though I do try and read through most upcoming Nintendo games.

I agree with everyone that the list is rubbish imo. NSMB2 should be at least 8 and KI:U is a serious contender for the top spot. SSF4 and Theatrhythm being so high was crazy. Tales of the Abyss and Metal Gear Solid 3 should be somewhere on the list. SM3D Land was fun to me, but lacked a personality that even the NSMB series has imho, and didn't deserve the top spot over Kid Icarus.

The score at the end of a review puts a quality stamp on a game based on someones opinion, and inherent subjectivity. It can lead to people disregarding the written review and the actual facts of the game. What's fun to some people isn't fun to others. Glitchy games can be infinitely more fun than completely perfected ones - so how should the score be allocated for those titles? You cant express a complex opinion about a game as a number, and never will you be able to objectively state how much people will enjoy a game. A well written review shouldn't need a score at the end - people should be able to learn about the game and judge whether or not it's something they enjoy without looking at a score and saying "It didn't even get an 8/10! There's no way I can possibly enjoy this game" or "Oh, it got a 9/10, I'd better buy it then!".

That's not even getting into how bad game scores are for the industry - the actual companies etc.
