Must a title on the Nintendo 3DS use the system's 3D effects? Not necessarily. That's the latest word from Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata, who suggests not all software must take advantage of a system's unique attributes. In fact the Nintendo executive went on to suggest Nintendo's own 3DS titles might not always be in 3D.
Awesome. As cool as the 3D effect is, I don't think many developers are at the point where 3D is something more than a feature they can use for advertising purposes without significantly improving gameplay. I'd rather have good games without the use of the 3D effect than bad games using the 3D effect.

Yeah because that 3D slider on the side is just for show.
What games would Nintendo not use 3D on? I would think that would only be the case of third-parties.
How exactly would using the 3D effect improve a traditional 2D platformer? If anything, as demonstrated by SSFIV, it could actually make the game worse by lowering the framerate to accommodate the 3D affect, even though the 3DS can handle 60 FPS in 3D.
The console was marketed for 3D gaming without glasses. The only edge it has over Sony is 3D without glasses. You take that away and suddenly it's a system with not that much more power than a PSP, which is outselling Nintendo 3DS 2 to 1 right now by the way...
@Apollo - You know, some of us prefer to have good games over games that look good. While using the 3D effect may make a game look better, if it adds nothing to the game it might as well not be used, so that the dev time can be used to make the game better gameplay-wise, not better graphics-wise. I don't think anybody who has played Cave Story wouldn't like it because the graphics didn't look modern.
It's logical. Don't forget that games like the AR games are almost unplayable with 3D on, same for other games that use the tilt feature (like Super Monkey Ball). So if you want that or the camera, 3D is a bad choice.

Oh, I see what you did there. You smugly suggested that I only like games that look good while totally disregarding everything I've said in here to date. Do you own a stake in Nintendo? I ask this because I've never seen you do anything but celebrate and defend everything that they put out to the media.
The poster in here said the comments are old yet if you go to the source that I included the Nintendo Exec goes on to reference Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land as he switches gears. He references the games by their NEW names. If the interview was old don't you think he would be referencing those games by their old names? The games only changed names in the past few weeks. That dates the interview as recent, as in the past few weeks.
Agreed, I don't care. 3D is cool and it should be used because that makes some sense but if my slider broke and couldn't use the 3D ever again, it would be a mild dissappointment I guess.
Well isn't not using 3d kind of implied with the 3d slider. I mean I know it's also there for the kids under 7 and for the people who can't see it. But it's kind of given that you don't have to use it. I think if there is no need for 3d don't use it. But I also feel some games look better in 3d and use 3d in good ways.
You guys are completely missing the point. The whole marketing campaign has been about 3D gaming. Already they're starting to move away from that. They've shown weakness in strategy many times already now and here is another crack. This comes only a week after EA came out and slammed 3D and suggested it's not profitable and said they won't support it.
Sony is going to eat Nintendo alive this round. I'm telling you man...

There are lots of games that would have better gameplay because of the 3D effect. Sure, some wouldn't, but as long as the feature is there, games might as well use it to look better. Gameplay isn't nearly as important as people make it out to be, anyway.

I don't think that's true because EA is working with nintendo on their wii u online. So why would they just slam their handheld. Plus the 3ds has tons of other features and doesn't necessarily need 3d for games. Plus they aren't moving away from 3d. Nintendo will be fine.
No, seriously though, not every game needs to have 3D. If a couple games lack the feature it's not as if the console loses any of its brilliance. 3D is great, but not some amazing key concept behind the 3DS. It's only a little more than a gimmick.
