Topic: If we own a retail version of a 3DS game, can we get the digital copy for free?

It would be great if you could "install" physical copies on your 3DS. For games such as Mario Kart 7, Final Fantasy Theatrhythm and the upcoming Animal Crossing, it would be perfect. Those are games that scream "pick up and play" and having them on your console would save the hassle of switching cartridge.

Wish they would implement such a thing. Doubt they will.

Getting a free download copy is the same as saying "I already have a copy of the game, can I get another one for free?". Thus, since you can't get two copies of retail games for the price of one, you shouldn't be able to get a free download copy.

I think a good way to implement this would be to offer discounts after registering a copy of the game, while still charging.

I'm somewhat stealing this from Rock Band. You can import the tracks from the earlier full games for a charge (Track Packs don't cost anything).

The funniest thing I've read today.

But I tell you what is even more funny/well depressing ,the fact Star Fox 64 3D is £39.99 to download on the E-shop.
And you can buy a brand new copy of the game for less than £15.

Nintendo you are such a bunch of comedians.

But... but... factoring in the price of petrol, car insurance, maintaining your car, the clothing you need to wear to be allowed outside, food needed for energy to walk into the store... that 39.99 is actually cheaper overall.

I never buy any clothes, because I've only got one piece of clothing and that's my birthday suit, and boy doesn't it save a lot of money, and it also gets a lot of nice looks form the ladies.

You also got to consider that Nintendo sets the MRSP. If they go against that, they'd be devaluating their own games. If a retailer wants to lower the price of it's stock for whatever reason (not selling, being a used copy), that decision is up to them (i.e. Nintendo isn't the one selling that $15 copy of SF643D).

It would also be a bad idea for Nintendo to competitively price their eShop downloads with the prices of retail distributers. Why? Because then they would be competing with the very people they're asking to carry their goods.

As a result, retailers would either A). Set their prices even lower (to be competitive), or B). The retailer would stop carrying Nintendo's goods altogether (being that now Nintendo is a competitor, why would they want to support them).

In scenario A, the eShop price would still end up higher, and in scenario B, a major blow would be done to Nintendo's profit. Nintendo still gets most of it's sales by way of retail, and they don't (yet) have a strong enough digital consumer base to offset the losses that would be incurred by retailers not carrying their games (I can't say Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Amazon, Target, ect, would be devistated by not selling Nintendo products, but it would have a very negative impact on Nintendo).

As it stands right now, the digital option is available for those who really want it, and are priced in a way that the retailers (Nintendo's largest source of sales) don't feel threatened. Maybe in a few years, if their furthuring efforts to go digital with 3DS and Wii U work, they might be able to give slightly more competitive prices digitally, but currently they Just don't have a large enough amount of digital consumers to do so.

Or, you know, those retailers (who also may sell digital copies) can realize the difference between a physical and digital game.

Which is pretty much nothing. It boils down to MSRP and absolutely nothing will change that. If a store sold you something for 39.99, but then sold it to 29.99 to everyone behind you in line, would you be happy? No. Which is why Nintendo has to follow the MSRP they give the retailer. Or the retailers would feel they were getting ripped off while Nintendo takes all the profit for themselves.

So what if there's no plastic or need for a physical store, etc? It stills costs money to sell a digital copy. The amount of moola Nintendo shoves into running the eshop has got to be pretty huge, People to create and maintain it and it's content, bandwidth for the bazillion downloads various people do, etc. It adds up quick.

If we could get digital copies for free, what's to stop us from stealing half of Nintendo's sales by buying a retail copy, getting a digital version, and then selling or giving away our retail copy?

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Well the same can be said about DVDs and yet I can do that just fine (except I don't sell my DVDs after I rip the CDs)

@RayWorld45, In the eyes of a retailer, what does it matter if there are differences between a physical and digital copy?

The way they see it, every time a game is downloaded, is a time when a game isn't bought in their store or through their site.

It is true that retailers can sell digital codes, but c'mon, how many people are really going to use that option? Probably not many, as one of the big advantages of digital purchasing in the first place, is bypassing a trip to the store. Sony & MS would probably already be doing the same thing, if it was such a lucrative idea (it's more of a reassurance to retailers on Nintendo's part, that they're not being left behind).

CDs/DVDs are also significantly cheaper than games and don't have an easy place to sell them to like Gamestop. Selling games there is quick, simple, and in cash. Plus, all those used games at Gamestop would undermine the price of the game; the excess of stock would force Gamestop to put out sales to get rid of them, and since none of that stock is going in to profit Nintendo, it isn't worth the effort to give the consumer a digital and physical copy of a game, especially when not too many people care for it in the first place.

Seriously, with Nintendo releasing all these cool retail games digitally, I have to wonder what I will do if I own the retail cartridges. Will I get the DLs for free?

Absolutely not. Nintendo aren't going to give away 2 games for the price of one.

The only way this might happen (which the 3DS isn't set up for) would be something like Steam - you buy a Steamworks game, and you get an install CD. however, when you install the game it attaches itself to your Steam account - thus, you effectively have a retail and a digital copy (although as soon as patches are released for your game, you'll need to download them before playing). That then gives you the option of downloading the whole game or installing from disc, but the account system means you are left with only a single license, which can be utilised through two different methods of distribution.

That would DESTROY profit. Imagine this. I buy NSMB2 retail. Then, I go home and just get NSMB2 download for free. That's $40 Nintendo loses. And everyone would do it. If I could download Mario Kart 7 (darn you Japan!!), I'd do it in a heartbeat. Then I'd sell MK7 and make profit. Bad...bad...bad for business.
