Hello, I'm sorry to disappoint you all who read the title and thought that I had news about an Ice Climbers game coming up, but no. That's not what the title was meant to explain to all of you. It was to explain idea.

However, I just bought Ice Climbers today on the 3DS Virtual Console and played it for about an hour. I remembered how awesome it was to play it as a child on my Game Boy Advance. It was one of the best "arcade-like" games that I have played, and I found it to be my second favorite, after Donkey Kong yet beating Galaga and Dig Dug from Namco Bandai. I know that Ice Climbers wasn't an arcade at the time, but I was only four years old when I played it on the GBA, and I thought it was a game like Dig Dug, Pac Man, Galaga, and Donkey Kong where it felt like an arcade. It still does, even though it isn't.

Ice Climbers has only made made one game in their franchise, and that was the NES Classic. Ice Climbers isn't that known, and that's also probably because of the actual gameplay and also the controls. The game is quite frustrating, and I actually like it. The two complaints that I have about the gameplay involve one being the screen after you finish a level. If you fail the Bonus Stage, you have to sit through your results, as one Popo (or whatever his name is) cries, I couldn't figure a way to skip it, and it makes me feel guilty for failing him. You could not skip the results, and it gets tiresome since you have to wait ten seconds of the game just sitting their looking at how you did per round. The other thing that I'm sure is very noticeable to anything who played it is the jumping. You could only jump three blocks ahead of you at your hardest, and it's difficult to turn another way while your in the air. It's very annoying and frustrating. Though, since it is what makes Ice Climbers so original, and I got used to it. I actually used it to my advantage.

Now, after all of that, I'm sure that there would have been no anticipation for a sequel at the time. I was born in the late 90's, so I wouldn't know much about it. However, Ice Climbers definitely make a nice adventure. I imagined how it would be like, and I thought of it as a third-person perspective like in Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy. I think that it would be great as an adventure game. As you climb up the mountains, you would have to encounter enemies and caves to pass through. With your mighty hammer, there wouldn't be much to be afraid of. It's a good idea, and would be great for two players. I would love to see one made for the Wii U or 3DS in sometime between 2015 and 2017. The franchise should continue, because the Ice Climbers should not be abandoned.

I was thinking about this too. I think that if done right, it could be done very well. The Ice Climbers deserve a second chance.

Hmm... Well, it would be a risky idea, and only could work now thanks to Smash Bros making the characters popular. It's admittedly a niche game, before Smash Bros it's existence was hardly known and even now very few people seem to actually enjoy the original (I personally don't care for it in the slightest), but it does seem to have a small but loyal cult following. If it was reborn as well as Kid Icarus was in Uprising, it could do pretty well, but I feel like Nintendo is simply playing too safe right now to take a risk with this old IP, Uprising was a nice surprise but right now Nintendo seems to be more into their current franchises.

I am in no way discouraging the game though, I am certain a reboot of the series has potential, I just wouldn't hold my breath anytime soon.

I read the title with much skepticism, however your explanation has quite redeemed the idea.

For some reason my only idea is a parody of the later parts of Journey.

I think Nintendo included them in Smash Bros BECAUSE they're exclusive to the NES, and they wanted someone from that era alone. I can't see this game really going anywhere...

Personally I just think them being on the VC was the wrong idea. Ice Climber would have been perfect as a 3D classic! That way they could also rework those nasty physics. There would be an "old physics" option too, of course.
