my 3DS had something like this L button issue but on the R button, in no time it stopped entirely and I had to send it to repair in the Nintendo authorized place.... it wasn't cheap(but every place has a different pricing) but they repaired it in 30min so it wasn't all that bad! and now it's even better than new(what might mean I got a 3DS with factory problems, what's kind of sad...)

mine didn't fall either it just stopped working.
but experience tells me that not sending it to repair soon might make the issue unrepairable(lost a GBA SP, Gamecube, ds lite and Wii for being stubborn and ignoring the problems)

Never had a button stuck down before.. But at one time, both my L and R buttons were dead. Now, they're just unsteady. From what I've seen, the most plausible answer to why the L/R buttons break is because of dust.
Solution that kinda worked for me
~ Blow into the L and R button slowly to allow some moisture. Then, hold down the buttons tight and move them from left to right.
Solutions that seem plausible
~Like one Youtube video, pour some alcohol into the L/R button that is unresponsive.
-Alcohol doesn't create short circuits
-Alcohol evaporates quickly
~Open the 3DS and clean the interior
