The XL was a weird feeling to me for awhile, having skipped DS and standard 3DS, and coming off standard console controllers, but it's pretty comfortable now.
I bought the download version of Fire Emblem for my current 3DS.
If I do a system transfer to a another 3DS, does the game stay on both systems?
Or is it cut from my current 3DS and pasted on to the other?
Welp, bought one off eBay for £120. Used, good condition and it comes with a charger. Bargain.
Now I'm really undecided on whether sell the one I already have. I've been taking it to work over the last week as it fits nicely in my pocket. The XL is a fair amount bigger.
One more question. If I do keep both consoles, can I swap the memory card between them to play the games I have installed on the card on either system?
Thanks for the answers so far. You are a helpful bunch.
Yes, you can swap it out and use all the data that's saved to your memory card. Make sure you completely power off your systems when swapping the memory card, or there's a chance you'll corrupt the data.
I was worried before buying it that the picture would be inferior on the XL over the original, but really, its not a huge difference, and the sheer size of the screens on the XL make it the superior system in my view, particularly with regard to 3DS. I have discussed this a minute ago on the other 3DS vs. 3DS XL topic in more detail. I certainly would not have any concerns about pixel stretching on the XL, and I have very good eye-sight at short distances.
I eluded to this earlier, but you can see much more animation and movement in the characters in Mario Tennis Open on the XL, and you can see a whole lot "more" of the gameworld in games such as Star Fox 64 3D, Pilot Wings Resort, and Mario Kart 7. Its very much "in your face" on the XL. However, it doesn't make the original redundant in my view - the Classic is a wonderful little device in its own right - think of the two systems as the Game Boy Micro (ie the Classic, more portable 3DS with pin-sharp picture) versus a back-lit GBA SP (3DS XL, more robust, less portable, but with a display that sucks you into its game world....).

Unfortunately no. The games you purchase are linked to the system you used to purchase them (although the actual data goes on the SD card). The only way to be able to play games you bought using the regular 3DS on your 3DS XL would be to do a system transfer.

Thanks. I kinda expected that. It's shame as I quite like the eShop too. I'll stick to buying hard copies in the future.
