So I just ordered SM3DL to play on my 2DS...
will I be missing much without the 3D effect?

I believe they updated the game to work better on the 2DS. I don't think you will be missing much, there were just some special rooms that might be difficult without 3D.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Not really, but it's a pretty lifeless game without it imo

You won't miss much, and the 3D rooms can be figured out even without 3D. But you'll love the rest of it anyway. Great game, good choice

It'll be as hard to land a 3d jump without depth perception as any other 3d Mario game.

It will be just as playable as super mario 3D world on the wiiu.

In other words, you won't be missing anything. It will work perfectly fine.

I played Super Mario 3d land without 3d effect. It makes a small difference but you will be fine without it.

Only level where 3D is crucial for the first playthrough would be the secret one.

As with any of them, the game is perfectly playable without 3D (some might say more so, if like me, the 3D effect hurts your eyes a little). Some say it helps with depth perception, though I specifically experimented with this and I didn't really notice any difference, I was able to make jumps perfectly fine with or without it (but then I've never had a problem with depth perception in Mario games).

You can definitely ignore the sort of fans who say things like "I never want to play a Mario game without the 3D effect again!!" because of course they're the same people now saying "Mario 3D World on Wii U is the best Mario ever!!" because they'll say anything...

It's a noticeable difference but not at all a game breaking one. It only makes a difference on certain sections where you have to judge the distance to a platform you're falling toward. That only makes up about 5% of the actual game, and it's possible to do it just fine in 2D. You'll just die a few more times. I'd say definitely get it anyway.

Thanks for the advice, all. I've beat the first world, and it initially seemed like something was missing. But yeah--just as playable, not missing a whole lot.

Even without the 3d, the game is great. I'm really feeling it. I like it a LOT better than the New Super games, I was always bad at those, and I love 2d platformers in general.

Here's hoping the later levels are challenging enough for me.

I can't use the 3d feature. And I beat the game just fine. I personally used the shadows in the game to judge distance and it served me well. Keep in mind I have only one eye so I use different tricks to analyze the world around me so this may not work for you. The game is totally doable in 2d though.
