The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Heroes of Ruin
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call
Bravely Default
Resident Evil Revelations 3D
Super Smash Bros. 3D
Pokemon XY
Pokemon ORAS
Fantasy Life
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright
Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies

Will you stop worrying about its lifespan? Its far from dead. It still will go on for few more years before it ends.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

The games I listed above should take you over 1000 hours to play with if you play through them properly... I mean, I clocked 300 hours on MH3U alone and just into the 100 hour zone for MH4U now.

I think I got bored with Heroes of Ruin at 100 hours too... So that's already 500 hours lol.

Well, considering the New 3DS/XL is the redesign/successor of the 3DS/XL we've got about a year or two before the next gen handheld console from Nintendo get's announced and later on released. Before anyone starts complaining or dismissing this, it's the usual thing that happens when the handheld receives it's redesign/successor "in it's family". The GBA SP lasted for about a year and a half before the DS came out, the DSi/XL lasted about two years before the release of the 3DS.
Now how long will 3DS games continue just all depends if it's is still receiving decent titles when the next gen handheld is nearing it's release. We've got a slight hope that the New 3DS will start releasing more games besides Xenoblade Chronices 3D. That might extend the 3DS life just a bit but nothing to amazing mind you. I doubt the 3DS is gonna receive the same experience as the DS where some games were still being produced at least half a year after the 3DS was released before they decided to stop. I believe near the end of this year or at some point in 2016 we'll hear the announcement of Nintendo's next gen handheld. Which will then be released either in late 2016 or early 2017.

I bought my N3DS with an eye on the games already available, not for what might yet come.

But the 3DS has a pretty good install base, which should keep it as an attractive system for developers if we keep buying the software.

Nintendo will be wise not to rush the next generation, it needs to produce a compelling product. I also don't think there's much to be gained by launching a new system too out-of-sync with Sony and Microsoft. Each new generation has its own hype machine and if you break out early you risk going a bit unnoticed, as the Wii U was.

Unlike Nintendo home consoles, Nintendo handhelds continue to get first party games for about two years after its successor comes out.

If you just brought it you should be more worried about how you're going to afford the plethora of great games already out for the system.

I agree with everyone above. I bought a 3ds several months ago (and a New 3ds when it came out) and I can get overwhelmed just trying to get through the back catalog of great games.

So lets see, the New 3DS just came out this year and depending on what we see at E3 this year a successor could be as far away as late 2017 (Japan) early-mid 2018 (Europe, Oceanian, and North America). The DS, is 10 years old and I think it still had games coming out until last fall! Plus DSiWare is still going strong too! The last first party game for the 3DS (going by my proposed timeline, which is subject to change!) will hit in 2019, maybe 2020 at the latest. The last 3rd party game??? Well, since we aren't in the "Casual Generation" like Gen. 7, 2020 really will be it for 3DS games. Maybe 2021, maybe! But I'd say 2019 is a solid bet for the last 3DS games to hit shelves. Thats 4-freakin years, 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I'd say we are in good shape!

Let the Guru add to that list too:
Animal Crossing New Leaf
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Story of Seasons
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Tomodachi Life
Mario Golf: World Tour
Rune Factory 4
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Project X Zone
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
Etrian Mystery Dungeon
Scribblenauts Unlimited
Rayman Origins
Harvest Moon: A New Beginning
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Sonic Generations 3D
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy (or the + version)
Star Fox 64 3D
Dead or Alive: Dimensions
Pilotwings Resort
Welp...I may have gone overboard. Seriously with half of these two lists, you could easily put 1500-2000+ hours into your 3DS, which would keep you content until well into the 3DS's successor's lifespan. If you want a list of downloadable games on the eShop or maybe some DS games, give me a shout!

I'd say the next handheld will be unveiled next year, and released in 2017. Nintendo supports their handhelds about 2-3 years after the successor is released, so you're looking at 2019-2020.

I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

That's a pretty sound looking list put up for 3DS recommendations. Given my N3DS is arriving this week and is my first ever handheld I am officially asking you for your DS game recommendations too

I wouldn't worry about that. In the old days, games would go out-of-print and would be ridiculously hard to find. Nowadays you can buy virtually any 3DS game via the eShop if a physical option is out of the question. There are no shortage of games on the system. Yes, the retail release schedule is a little bare at the moment, but there are still plenty of new releases heading to the eShop on a weekly basis.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
