@iLikeUrAttitude Do you use your Switch for it's handheld mode? I honestly I never pick it off the dock, even in situations where I could. I just don't want to risk my home-console and my handheld taking it on the go, I'd much rather bring my 3DS.

@MFD I'm going to have to be honest with your question. I still haven't played my Switch yet cause I can't open it until Christmas. But I have a friend in school who let's me play with his Switch in lunch. While I was playing Mario kart on it I noticed how nice the screen looked despite it being in 720p and while it is small I still had no trouble playing with it in splitscreen (at least with 2 players). The controllers also weren't uncomfortable and they felt even better with the accessory he had on them.

I also got to play with a demo Switch at a nearby Best Buy (unfortunately I couldn't take it off the dock). The joycon grip wasn't pain aching like people said it was, in fact it was actually confortable, but that's probably because I have small hands.

But I agree with you. I wouldn't want to risk bringing my Switch outside of my home. I'll most likely just play with it in bed all day, maybe if I had a carrying case but I still don't see that happening. My 3ds on the otherhand I bring to school every day cause it fits in my pocket and everywhere else.

But once Christmas comes around I know I will enjoy my Switch.

I mean like this.
We know all video games will be discontinued someday.
So, before they are discontinued, for 3DS case, i can expand my collection by searching for Old titles that i have never owned before while waiting for upcoming 3DS games. If the upcoming titles still not under my radar, i can continue searching another Old 3DS games on Different Region like Japan ONLY 3DS games. If even Older 3DS games still not really captivating me, that means i'm enough with the numbers of my 3DS games that i have.

I didn't mean i want Wii U & 3DS E-shop discontinued asap, i mean i keep searching for another 3DS games whether they are Upcoming titles or Older titles.

I personally think that 2018 will be the last true year of the 3DS. After that, it'll likely still have a slight lease on life through third parties for a bit longer. It'll be a sad day when that realization truly hits me, but such is the cycle of new/old systems.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

@Anti-Matter Oh I get it know. You want to expand your collection of games before they are discontinued on the eshops.
Personally I don't like collecting games if I'm not going to play them straight away. I only buy the games if I know I'm going to play them and if they match my taste.

I think we got Final Fantasy VI Advance on GBA two and a half years after DS' launch. I like that type of support. (though it helped that the DS could play GBA games, admittedly)

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if 3DS still gets games in Japan in 2019.

I prefer Physical 3DS games.
Not all 3DS games i will collect.
I browse from playasia, gamefaqs to getting know what other 3DS titles that caught my attention.
And before i choose the games, i watch from Youtube first about gameplay to determine Approval or Rejection.
Also, i calculate my budget to buy the games because i'm still looking for other games such as Switch, PS4, Wii, NDS, GBA, PS2, etc, not just only 3DS.

With Pokemon coming to Switch, it feels like a new handhold only console won't be made. I could see a Switch Handheld being released so that people who want to play Switch games at a lower price point or want something a bit more durable have that option but all signs point to Nintendo being sold with their Switch branding and not expanding from here at least in the foreseeable future.

I'd think that the 3DS will hang on for another year. It's still a nice entry level machine, with a superb library of games, for those who can't afford a Switch just yet and it's also far better designed for portability.

Maybe they'll eventually make a Switch Lite that's optimized for handheld use. I'd like to see a return to the clamshell design with just the screen up top and the controls and electronics in the bottom. If they can do a die shrink on the Tegra they might be able to improve the battery life, up the power of handheld mode to the level that it currently gets when docked, and make it about the same size and weight as the unit without the joycons currently is.

That should finally be enough to make the 3DS redundant, but it's probably a couple of years down the track.

"How long until the 3DS dies?'

About 3-5 hours, if it's the basic model.

I think the 3ds gets decent support this year from Nintendo (thinking 5-8 games) and then in 2019 support drops off but is still there (1-2 games). I don't think we get a dedicated handheld successor and I think Nintendo mobile games will be viewed as the new secondary platform.

Even when the 3DS will stop being supported it wont die for me. I will still play it daily. I mean, I can totally see myself playing pokemon Y two years from today as I still play pokemon heart gold today. and more than that, despite the fact I have purchased so many great 3DS titles (not including the amazing DS ones) I still have games I wanna buy and didnt have the chance to - stella glow, sonic the shattered crystal, monster hunter stories, ever oasis - so many great titles I just couldnt buy because I bought others.

yep, such a great system. the 3DS will live forever!

BravelyDavid

@VoltageX I agree with everything you said, including the games you didn't play. Ever Oasis is awesome. I would try Sonic Boom Fire & Ice before Shattered Crystal though. Shattered Crystal had some bad progression and forced exploration and overall Fire & Ice took that formula and tailored it more to what a Sonic game is.

I think they'll support it through 2018, with a smattering of games and later ports, but I think it's all but done at the end of 2018, especially if Pokemon Switch lands...that signals the end of "equal" status of 3DS to me.

It was a great platform and I'll miss it. Still have a backlog for it. But I'm so glad its successor is the upgrade that 3DS deserved! I miss the 3D but I don't feel like I'm leaving behind what I loved about 3DS, I feel like I've upgraded it.

Technically it's already laying in it's coffin, just waiting for the nails to be driven in.

The 3DS will never die for me, well at least not for a couple of years. I still have plenty of games that I haven’t played yet and many more that I want to buy but haven’t. I’ve had a Switch for a couple of months and haven’t played it yet. I prefer gaming on my 3DS

Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword
