No, absolutely not! It works for some spinoffs that let you control the Pokémon directly like the Pokémon Rumble and Poképark games, but for the main RPG releases, turn-based battles are an indispensible part of the core formula that makes Pokémon work as well as it does.

Honestly, the battle system is the reason I got tired of Pokemon. It's way too simplistic and boring compared to other RPGs, even other turn-based RPGs. It wouldn't be hard to use a new battle system and also keep Pokemon's "core" intact.

Merging attacks is an amazing idea.

Turn every HM into TMs. Flash was turned into a TM and it still can be used as if it was an HM. Same thing with Sweet Scent. Never was an HM, but it does have field affects. Or how about the Trainer, like suggested, just have items to use in the field? A Lamp for dark places, Axe for cutting down trees/bushes, rock climbing equipment for.. rock climbing. Keep the moves, though. No point in getting rid of them. But moves like Surf, Waterfall, Dive.. Those should be kept as field moves but turned into TMs...

Ehh, I don't see any real value in having items for stuff like that rather than allowing your pokémon do that kinda stuff instead, say maybe you manually control them or kinda Z target or whattever what needs to be done, or certain areas step by step to complete a particular task.

Or how about it's one of a Pokemon's "traits"? For example: Scyther knows Cut naturally. It doesn't have to be a "move" necessarily. Pokemon like Pigeot or Swellow know Fly, but it's not a move, like I explained with Scyther. They can cut down obstables, move boulders without any need to learn moves and the like. Only problem, what happens to these moves? Maybe getting rid of Cut would be okay. But Surf and Waterfall are really useful moves. Unless they want to change the name of them entirely?

@Kaiser, Dave, Mickeymac, turtle: it's not like it's a new idea; i'm pretty sure i've seen the like before. i kept thinking back to Civilization where you have to have learned X technology and Y technology to progress to Z technology (like alphabet + masonry = mathematics is possible to learn), though it'd just be adapted to a Pokemon title, lol. something like that might actually help to get me back into the series :3

@DaveGX, @KomicZ: Getting the required badge should allow your Pokemon to use the field move even if they haven't "learned" it.

yea I dunno man. I like the real-time idea, better. it seems to kinda work for the TV series. Plus look how many moves Pikachu has been using since the start to current; He's almost always for the longest time had thundershock or thunderbolt, sometimes thunder. then up to little things like agility, or now irontail, i'm not too sure what else after that. So in some sense they didn't do a very good job of keeping track, so i still kinda don't see it hindering the series to allow a bit more room for attacks.

They've done an excellent job of keeping track of Pikachu's attacks in the anime once they started enforcing the 4 move limit in either Johto or Hoenn. At that point, Ash's Pikachu knew Thunderbolt, Thunder, Quick Attack, and Agility. He forgot Agility to learn Iron Tail. He forgot Thunder to learn Volt Tackle. Most recently, he forgot Volt Tackle to learn Electro Ball, making his current moveset Thunderbolt, Quick Attack, Iron Tail, and Electro Ball.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

There are numerous things that could be improved Pokemon, but it's actually fine the way it is. It just needs A LOT more content is all, Pokemon of today just ain't as hype as the old school Pokemon though (Kanto, Johto<3, Hoenn), sucks really.
But a new Pokemon game for 3DS would be incredibly awesome.... hopefully.

Yeah you're right, I honestly like the old school tradition but it's time to get modern and up-to-date...

I don't know about you guys but I'm sick of pokemon's old gameplay style.
Lets face it, the game is dated and broken, and poke B/W didn't help alot of the older pokemon improve.
I would glady give up everything I done in the past pokemon game just to start fresh again with a better gameplay and story then the last, I don't even want to add the last pokemon I got from the last game, I would glady leave them to die.
I been there done that, I have everything in pokemon, even EV and IV trained shinies pokemon that you wish that you had.
Named any pokemon, and I'll have it EV and IV trained, shiny, with egg moves, and its from Dream World, and none them are hacked at all.
Pokemon's gameplay is so flawed that winning a battle with one well trained pokemon has become even more easy, online battles have become one sided for me, I rarely lose a match ( and that only happens when you run into a team of OU) , and thats starting to get boring, theres no challenge anymore, you already know the out come and whats the fun in that?

When it comes down to is, Pokemon needs to be change from the ground up, it isn't 1995 anymore
Every pokemon is fawled, and you know it, it's time to smell the nasty Muk we been playing for years.

@LordJumpMad - Care to take on my brother then, his matches have been one sided and he seeks a challenge. I can give you a match to if you wish, but I might not hold up for long as I don't IV train.

I still enjoy it but like LordJumpMad said lot's of battles are one sided and the fastest ones with powerful attacks, always seem to win, it could be rebalanced

@LordJumpMad: There's many ways to make Pokémon game more exciting with the resources we have. I've done some "challenges" like Ultimate Monotype Challenge, Random Pokémon Challenge and I've considered doing Nuzlocke Challenge many times. Here's rules for Nuzlocke Challenge if you really want some challenge to your Pokémon games:

1. If a Pokemon Faints, its dead, release it.
2. No Healing Outside of battle (optional)
3. You can only catch/recieve one Pokemon in each Area. A town is one area, a route is one area, a cave is one area, etc. Should you fail to catch a Pokemon for any reason (other than game corruption) than too bad.
4. You must nickname all of your Pokemon (optional, but highly recommended)
5. No catching legendaries.
6. Trading is disallowed, but the reasons following this clause are allowed. Egg trading is okay, same thing with Pokemon that can't have eggs. (optional) Trading simply for the purpose of evolution is perfectly OK.
7. Change the battle style to SET. (optional)

It's its, not it's.

Here's my idea for a new battle system. This one is real-time.

First, 1-on-1 battles.

  • Battles take place in a small "arena" that has the same terrain as the area you're in. (If you're battling in a forest, there will be lots of trees and bushes, etc.)
  • You move your Pokemon around with the circlepad. Movement speed could be determined by the Pokemon's speed, weight, or both.
  • A, B, X, and Y are used to attack. Each button is for one of the Pokemon's four moves.
  • Attacks don't use PP anymore. Instead each attack has a recharge time after it's used. More powerful moves take longer to recharge.
  • Different moves would allow Pokemon to attack in a variety of ways. Tackle makes them lunge forward, Thundershock would be a quick ranged attack, Water Gun acts like a garden hose, and so on. Attacks that have lower accuracy could be designed to be harder to hit with.
  • Attacks that do damage over multiple turns would work like area effects. You use Fire Spin, and Fire Spin keeps going in the same part of the arena.
  • You use touchscreen to switch Pokemon or use items. Four items could be assigned to the D-pad to use quickly.

Here's how it would work for double and triple battles (since you obviously can't control them all at once).

  • L and R switch between the Pokemon you have out.
  • The Pokemon you're not controlling are handled by the game's AI.
  • You can set basic strategies for how you want them to behave in different situations.

No... let's face it, Pokemon sucks now as well as the series, it just ain't as good or as close to the old school versions. My Black version is cathin' some SERIOUS dust right now and idk how Veteran Pokemon Trainers still play be playin' "Hardcore", it's just borin' n' all now.

And I agree with @LordJumpMad yo, it's time for a change.... with a more realistic game play... I hope they make a Pokemon game for 3DS cause I wanna' see Pokemon in 3D, it would look amazin'. But until they make a new Pokemon game that actually brings back a nice nostalgic feeling, is actually GOOD with excessive content and can obliterate your social life... then it'll just get worst.

What's interesting is that people are eager to jump on Madden and Call of Duty for stagnation when Pokemon has been repackaging the same thing for years.

Just airing a completely off topic pet peeve.

Fact is, for every 5 or 6 people who think pokemon is dated and broken, there are hundreds of new gamers enjoying their first pokemon games and many veteran pokemon gamers that enjoy the simplicity that the system has. Sure some updates would be nice like allowing any move to be overwritten at any time without needing a move deleter but I can't really think of any real problems with the games
