When I first got my 3DS, I noticed that when I had it opened, and moved it a bit, the hinge connecting the two parts, top screen and lower screen jingled around slightly. Is this normal? My DS Lite is very sturdy, I've had it for 4 years, dropping it alot and it hasn't been harmed at all.

A DS (original) or DS Lite is more likely to break than a 3DS. I say that since DS Lite was notorious at launch for having those dreaded hinge cracks in spite of people taking care of them. The original DS simply can't take a fall (a friend dropped mine from a modest height and it was almost in two pieces).
Really, you should just carry it around in one of those pouches or buy a protective case and you'll be fine. 3DS can harm its own screens if you slam the unit shut, so just make sure to close it slowly and wipe the screens occasionally.

I dont know I have had my Original DS since launch and dropped it a few times and it still works fine, not sure what your friend did to it that it broke in two. As for the DS lite not sure how sturdy those are so I cant say.
Basically like komicturtle said if you think its a problem call Nintendo and see what you can do. If its under warranty than it will probably not cost much to get it fixed.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
I know that the DSi is quite sturdy mine has been dropped in snow and gravel and hardly any damage. Most of these weren't my fault.

I dropped my DS Lite on asphalt from 4 feet once. There was no damages other then many major scratches and gouges. And the fact the entire top screen is a light blue color. But other then that, it was fine.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
@Tasuki Maybe it landed at a weird angle or something, but it was just your typical "oops, my hand slipped, dropped your DS from 3 feet". Probably didn't help that it fell on hard flooring as opposed to carpet I guess, but there's nothing tape can't fix. The unit still worked, despite being disconnected on one hinge and extremely close on the other.
I once dropped my DS Lite 4 ft on to pavement right after I got it, 4 years later still works great. The 3ds just doesn't seem as sturdy. I have a friend who's hing of his DS Lite broke off though.

My DSi fell once from the stairs, from the 1st floor. No, I wasn't clumsy, someone threw it purposely. The DSi was already a year old, and it didn't break. I was reliefed of course.
And I'm having problems with the stedy of the 3DS itself. Everything feels so loose, and whenever I want to press the HOME/START/SELECT buttons I hear noise as if the 3DS' cover is about to crack. My DSi felt more secure, I being a worry wart with the idea that my 3DS won't last long without a repair or two, it's making me uncomfortable. Already now there are scratches on my D-pad somehow, and very little damage on the side of my 3DS after letting it fall on the ground when someone pushed me.
I suppose I have it to wear a protector case at all time...
I'd think it'd be pretty durable. I once dropped my DS lite down a flight of wooden stairs, and all that came out of it were a few marks. I've also dropped my DSi on asphalt and hard flooring several times.
Maybe I'm just over protective. The 3DS costs so much, I'm worried over every little thing that may cause it harm or anything that makes it seem broken. I'm paranoid ha ha.

Ah that could be it maybe just the point of impact or something. I dropped my original DS on a tile kitchen floor and on the sidewalk as well it got some scratches from the sidewalk but other than that it was fine.

Jeez... You guys have butterfingers. I've never dropped my DS lite and DSi. Ever.
My DSPhat, only one time and that was in my own home. Got up from the bed with my DS in hand and for some reason was thrown near the door. There is a tiny scratch below the touch screen (like another mic hole lol) but it was fine. First and last time.
