Topic: How durable is the hinges on both 3ds/XL?

Posts 1 to 20 of 20

I'm really such a paranoid that I keep seeing videos where somehow, these people managed to break the hinges on the systems and that worries me whether that same thing will happen to me or not.

So besides huge impacts and all other risky methods, how strong are the 3ds/XL hinges and was there a time that the hinges were broken by simply shaking the top screen?

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

all I can say is that the 3DS hinges are more durable than the hinges on DS(obviously, the hinges on DS would break out of nowhere it was the main flaw on it, IMO) and DS Lite.
so far I had no problems with the hinges on my 3DS and I have it since December 2011.
the LR buttons and the rubber on the circle pad(not the circle pad just the gray rubber in it, that is pretty much useless) on the other hand..... such fragile things......

I'm worried that the led light will just come out like that by just opening or closing the system.....

Had 3ds since launch, everything is fine.

XL has survived a couple of nasty drops, so it's fine

I had some sort of curse that caused my DS Lites to pressure crack but have had no issues with my 3DS and 3DS XL.

I have a launch 3DS and the Pokemon XL Blue 3DS, both are doing fine, but I have never dropped them or hit them.

As @GuSolarFlare, the rubber on the 3DS circle pad regularly falls off but I put it back on no problem. But the triggers are ok.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

according to him, the hinges will break if the xl is simply opened and closed rapidly. Is this really true?

I'm paranoid about this because i don't want the xl's led to get broke all of a sudden. Is the material made of steel or plastic?

Well, if you want to open a XL at super speeds you will probably end up opening it too much.

Don't fling it across the room, then there's nothing to worry about.

I've dropped mine on concrete driveways.. nothing but a few scratches! (don't expect it to stay pretty looking for long..)

Otherwise it's pretty sturdy.. the DS lites on the other hand I've went through maybe 4 of them.. all of them had the hinge broken eventually (first few lets say I was not a very patient young child at the time.. )

I also have this weird dot (single pixel) that's bearly noticable on the screen at the top.. no clue where it came from but it never goes away.

is it possible that by keeping the XL in the pocket, the hinges will start to wear out soon?

Been carrying my XL in pocket everywhere and also since launch. I've stepped on it, dropped it on the ground multiple times, smashed it on corners while in my pocket, lent it to a friend who would just slam it closed like he would with his old crappy flip phone whenever he finished his play session... lots of lickin and it's still a tickin lol

Well, I've had my 3DS XL since last October, and one of the hinges on it (the one above the LED) already snapped off, and that's without having ever mistreated it, just from opening and closing it. Everything still works perfectly, but it does look a bit ugly missing that chunk...

Socar

@Deviant_Mugen so like how do you hold it? is it taped or does the XL still stay firm? Have you gotten it repaired?

I can't understand why people praised the XL if something like this happens? Isn't it a bad thing? Then that would mean that I'd be better off with the original 3DS......

@Artwark he/she might have been unlucky to get a not so good 3DSXL(those things happen all the time on mass produced stuff a few come broken or weird/weaker, the buttons on my 3DS feel softer than on the other 3DSes, for example sad thing I only discovered it after the warranty was gone)

I believe the reason why everybody is using XLs is because the regular 3DS were discontinued.

I thought only the aqua blue 3DS was discontinued.
plus many people like a bigger screen and more comfort than stronger light(when charging) and somewhat better sound so the XL almost always wins.

Huh, they praise it because this is not a common thing that happens to everybody with the system?

It seems you are prone to suppress positive comments and highlight the negative experiences.

True, I think they only make pink and cosmic black ones now.
