Walk around with the 3DS closed (or alternatively, rhythmically shake it)
100 steps earns you one play coin, you can only get 10 coins a day. You can hold up to 300 play coins.
Moving the 3DS calendar forward to the next day will let you collect a further 10 play coins. Set the calendar back to normal, and back forward one day to repeat.
I prefer not to do this because it can interfere with the activity log.
You usually don't have to walk for very long to get your 100 play coin limit for the day. Make a quick trip around the block .. or down to the end of the street and back will probably do it.

indeed, just close your 3DS and take it for a walk. A quick trip to the store usually does it for me. :3

[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!
actually, you can sit on the sofa and just waggle your 3DS back and forth and get your coins. do a few waggles then check your coin total to see if it's working; if not, then try waggling/waving it a little differently.
i find that a 'royal wave' type waggle works best.

Actually, if you set it ahead 1 day and then immediately set it back 1 day before leaving the settings, that works as well and that way you can always keep your system at the correct time — still interferes with your logged steps though.
What I do is this: Obviously I'm not still going to have my 3DS in the year 2050... Probably not even in 2020!
Set the date to anywhere from the year 2020 and up. Then, after I get the maximum of 10 playcoins, I set the date one day further. I once got 300 play coins in one day by doing this!
Note: Set the date to the first of January, and just keep moving up from there.
Also, the royal wave waggle is the best thing ever.
Why would anyone want to get more than 10 coins a day? (to the point of having to cheat the system)
It's not like they're used for anything important.
To finish StreetPass Puzzles and Find Mii, some of us actually like to do those

Yeah, but, is there really a need to finish them "NOW" instead of "eventually" as they're meant to be finished?
Most of the time I just have 300 coins sitting on my "wallet" until I remember I can spend them on those.

Puzzle Swap is one thing, but StreetPass Quest II is a very demanding mistress.
There are also more titles that become demanding of play coins, like stationary in Swapnote or missions in Sonic Generations, or idol tossing eggs in Kid Icarus (but you should just play the game to get extra eggs)
