yeah, I can't see any appeal in smart phone games, I see kids everywhere playing them and they just look so cheap and shallow. which is why the ouya is a total mystery to me. who's buying that thing? who'd want to play android games at home on their tv?

I suppose if Nintendo decided to include a phone option in their next handheld, and a wider variety of apps, that would be ok, as long as it still has buttons, circle pad (2 would be nice), a d-pad. and they keep making proper games, not cheap smart phone shovelware garbage. honestly though, if Nintendo did make a handheld with a phone I doubt many would view it as a replacement for a smart phone, I could be wrong though.

The 3DS can compete against smartphones by doing exactly what it's doing.

I had 2048 on my phone, but ended up buying the 3DS version anyway because of the lack of ads, more features, and button input.

While mobile phone games are definitely becoming more sophisticated and this argument isn't Snake vs. Super Mario Land, gaming on a phone can't hold a candle to gaming on a dedicated portable console in my opinion simply because the console was built specifically for gaming while the phone is becoming a multimedia device where gaming is only a small part of what it can do. Say what you will about being able to browse the web and watch Netflix on the 3DS, it is, first and foremost, a game console.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

Actually your wrong. I don't own a cellphone or smartphone

How does that negate most?

I have a smartphone, so it's at 50/50 so far.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

I think one of Nintendo's strenght is the community. May be it's just me, but I noticed that those who love Nintendo a bit more kind and generous than fans of other platforms. Maybe it's because most of top games are not violent and goodhearted.
It wasn't the thing I bought my 3DS for but definitely I can stay with Nintendo solely because of it.
I love Nintendo and love you, guys.

The 3DS can't compete with the smartphones for this reason, Smartphones are a better value meaning the games are "Mostly Free" but the games that are not free mostly end up being free. What "free" game does Nintendo have to offer? None & Nintendo can't even catch up with the time. (Online) Hell we still have to do the stupid Friend-Code, we don't have any way to message our friends. Cause these day everything has to be "Social". Nintendo is still in 1998. The games on there are way to expensive to buy. I can go on for hours telling you guys why Nintendo can't compete with Smartphones. But the fact is unfortunately they can't compete & they don't need to. No I don't own a smartphone I own a computer that lets me run Android. I don't plan on having one anytime soon. I love the 3DS but Nintendo & Nintendo can't compete. Sorry.

Well, considering that most smartphone games are free and kids these days are stuck on them 24/7, it will be tough. Even though I am a big fan of Nintendo, we will probably only get one more portable console from them. Same with home consoles, we might have one more generation after this, and then it will all go to PC.

The 3DS could compete by doing three major things
1. Add free games to the eShop
2. Release GBA games on the eShop to EVERYONE
3. Advertise like CRAZY

I don't think we really need to worry about this. I would say they already technically are, just in a very indirect way. Instead of offering Facebook and Twitter, they just have Miiverse, and maybe if they had a video chat or something... Nintendo will probably never make a phone type device, though. They'll just keep adding features and explaining why others are absent to keep people infuriated.

People shouldn't be expecting Nintendo's next handheld to be Android based or for phones to have game like 3DS. If that were to happen, Google would probably own Nintendo, and they might be run to the ground with microstransactions. You have to buy Pokeballs for $.30 a piece, and you can only take 1000 steps until you have to pay $.99 to continue.

You don't want Nintendo to be like smartphones, anyway.

The 3DS is a magical word of the day known as the Gaming Device and let's keep it like this the reason the Xbox One is getting so much hate is because it tries to hard, I'd hate to see a upcoming Nintendo handheld focus on having LTE connection, have the ability to Skype and other Social Media things and have cheap and trashy free games as I wouldn't get it probably, why should I? I already have a Samsung Galaxy S4 that could do all of that, if I get a Nintendo handheld it's cause I want to play the next Pokemon game not to spend my life scrolling though Facebook or Instagram

I've never really understood why people compare the 3DS to smartphones or worry about competition between the two. From what I've seen, most serious gamers are going to buy a device that's meant to solely play games.

People who occasionally play some Angry Birds wouldn't bother to buy a 3DS anyway. The level at which they play games is so small that a $180 system would be wasted money. Nintendo's already doing well with the 3DS too, so I don't think it's much of an issue personally.
