Ok I'll admit that this thread might be a little silly but then why is it that people here agree that the handheld gaming is fading off and that the smartphones are the new thing here?

Would it mean that there really isn't much hope for the handheld gaming industry?

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

I believe the opposite. It is kinda the thought of do you want 1 thing that does lots of things ok, or many this that each do their own job amazingly? I would take the many things. I own a smart phone and for the 2 years I have had it I spent maybe $10. 3DS I have owned since that first price drop and spend over $100 a year. The 3DS does games better. It is hard to make money off Smart Phones but if you are able to make a profit it is normally a large profit. We will see what happens in the future but Sony Handhelds prove you can't throw in extra features to make it more like a phone and make a profit, takes something different.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

It's simple: the 3DS can't compete against smart devices, and it should be in Nintendo's greatest interest not to start competing with them, either.

Let's face it, smart gaming is about casual, quick rounds of entertainment, and that's very clear to most developers. Developing a game on a smart that can truly compete with a good 3DS game just isn't possible. Yes, there are ports of core games like GTA, Final Fantasy, and even Monster Hunter - but keep in mind that these games exist for being milked, and they're mostly targeted at fans, not the average smart device owner.
Smart devices are primarily information exchangers (no, not communication, sorry), not gaming platforms. That's just an optional feature, but in no way a focused one. That also means there's no real incentive to take it seriously for gaming - which shows by the simple nature of many games on smart devices.

Now, what's the competition here? It's the projection of people who want to glorify their preferred gaming platform - that's what all console wars have been about, and it's now, 3DS Vs. Smart Devices is used by media to generate traffic. It's a bait. And many bite.

You need to look at it like this: is the device you play on a dedicated gaming platform? Is everything it can do geared towards enhancing your gaming experience? Then it's a gaming console. If not, it's simply not a console, and, by extension, not supposed to compete with dedicated gaming, so leave it at that. It's what brought up the console Vs, PC debate (which is incredibly annoying and pointless), and it creates a lot of unnecessary tension in general.

I don't own a cellphone or smartphone. I have literally no use for a phone. if I truly want to call some one I just use the home phone.

This is like preferring a fax machine over an email address, to be honest. One does everything the other does and more, plus is cheaper, more convenient, and accessible from anywhere.

I can guarantee you that you could get a cheap call and text cellphone on pay-as-you-go for less than what you're paying now for your land line.

@Barbiegurl777 I envy your decision to not have a cell phone. I really want to break the smartphone curse but no matter how many times I've tried a new phone magically appears at no expense. I can take my Galaxy S5 outside right now, throw it on the road and laugh maniacally while cars smash it to pieces but come tomorrow morning my work will have a new one ready to rock n roll... It's just like a bad nightmare this curse

@MAB And that's why they call it a smartphone, because it's smart enough to come back, no matter what you do with it! :0

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

as gaming devices, smartphones aren't really good
but they're pretty useful when used as pocket computers(or just, you know, pocket telephones like they were suposed to.... >.> )
you guys know that life isn't just gaming all the spare time you have, right?

Well, what a coincidence! Your cellphone history is pretty much the same as mine: had one, never used it, got rid of it, never needed one again!
It's nice to know that there are people who don't cling to their phones all day. ^_^

@BarbieGurl777 The only time I ever use a phone is when my parents want to call me and that's that.

@GuSolarFlare Atleast games you achieve something other than things that are too difficult to achieve in reality. Also who cares if other things have to be in mind when you have Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem to make you laugh at reality......?

@Artwark when I said that life isn't all just gaming, I meant that just because smartphones aren't as good for gaming as the 3DS, they shouldn't be dismissed as useless.
though I believe people try too hard to use videogames to escape from reality, they are fun and interesting but no one should try to use any form of entertainment as a substitute to the real world.

man you guys take videogames too seriously, it's all fun, interesting and addicting but it's not real, it must not be real nor mistaken with reality.

I agree with other comments here. Handheld gaming devices shouldn't try to compete with smartphones. I think there will always be a market for dedicated handheld gaming devices. I also have zero use for a smart phone and can't stand being with a group of people who are all staring at their phones. I have a cheap pay as you go cel phone and that's all I need. I don't need to be connected to facebook and twitter 24/7 and generally in my free time I'd rather be gaming than doing most anything else.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I don't usually make calls, but when I do, I just use my landline.

Exactly the same. But I honestly tried some time ago to blend into 247 online community with twitter, facebook and so on. It felt like a job so I gave up. Now my android phone works 7-8 days before recharging. Actually, now i think I've bought it just to charge from time to time.
Also, I can't understand the point of mobile games. It like trading gold for colored glass. Where is the fun? I honestly hope that people will eventually get tired of such kind of gaming and start to look for something better.
