The only limitation is the video has to be under 10min. Before I get into the fuss, here is the link: http://www.taringa.net/comunidades/nintendo3ds/4243825/Como-c... Yes, I know this website is in Spanish(If your using google chrome, a the browser should request a translating to english). I arrived at this website via youtube. I am not sure if this is actually legal or not. Anyway, all this does is make a video playable on your 3DS. You cannot just stuff a video into your 3DS without going though this.. But trust me, this works!
Not extremely into nintendo at the moment, but not really into anything else either. :|
We've known how to transfer videos from Youtube to our 3DSs practically since the last major update occurred; there's also plenty of video and web tutorials showing you how to do it, so I'm sure that anyone who wanted to could find a video/site in English to tell them how to do it.
I don't think it will be possible to get over 10 mins of video onto the 3DS, I've tried by messing with the video header to make the 3DS think it is shorter than it actually is, but it didn't work as expected. The length of the video seems to be calculated from the number of frames and the fps rate of the video so when I managed to get it to think that 20 mins of vid is actually 10 mins, it just played back at twice the speed.
The only way round it would be a change in the software/firmware on the 3DS itself which isn't something I'd be planning to do ever.

please remember that ripping videos of licensed TV shows and movies from YouTube and putting them onto your 3DS is technically piracy in action, thus we don't talk about that kind of thing here at NL. if you'd like to discuss using this conversion tool for your own home movies that's fine, though. thank you all in advance :3
BEST THREAD EVER future of NL >:3
[16:43] James: I should learn these site rules more clearly
[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!
Okay, this is simply ridiculous. No matter what you do, change it to .avi, change the video codec ect. it just will not play on your 3DS. I've recently found out you have to go through this whole long winded process to change it to the proper codec ect. before it'll work on your 3DS. Why must you make things so complicated Nintendo? Good god...
You just gotta use Super Video Converter to format it to the specifications that the 3DS uses for it's video files. Had to cut them up too though cause it won't play anything over 10 minutes. I love the internet it has much good infos. xDD
Might as well share what I gots. AVI as the output container. M-JPG as the codec. ADPCM IMA as the Audio codec. FFmpeg as the converter. Change resolution to 480x240, FPS 20. Audio to 11025. 1 Channel. Under 10 minutes.
p.s. been a lurker for quite some time =] love this site!! but figured i would open an account and reply to this thread
That's what I'm thinking...don't think its illegal if you're just taking a video and copying it on your system to view elsewhere. (if it is then that's just stupid. >.>)

I've come to the conclusion that this ain't worth the hassle, you have to change this, change that, convert this, convert that, download this, download that. I just can't be bothered, please just let me change the format, shove it on my SD card and go. Why must do I go through all this tedious, annoying crud of converting it all just so I can watch a video on my 3DS? Utterly ridiculous...
Just upload the .avi file to a file hosting site and link user to that download. I don't think YouTube recognises it as a 3D file but a direct transfer (rather than upload to YouTube and download from YouTube) will probably work.
Ok sorry to bump this, but I'm trying to load videos onto the 3DS...anybody know what i gotta do exactly for it to work? >.> A friend showed me something called "Free Studio" which can do video converting, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I can put any JPEG file (image) and MP3 file (audio) onto my 3DS, so why isn't it that easy for movies?
I looked at what Zemus said and put all that stuff in EXACTLY, and it still doesn't work...so I've no clue what I'm doing wrong. I think I even tried recording a small video to see what the properties of the video the 3DS created, and didn't get far...might try it again, but I dunno...ugh.
