Topic: Ghost Recon : Shadow Wars - Too Lengthy, or Just Me?

I think I was about 34% through the main missions before I put the game down. I had been playing for a week and missions started taking 2-4 hours to complete...

Was it just me taking my time and playing like the casual gamer I am? Or did anyone else have this same problem playing through GRSW?

I'm playing it as my bed-game recently. Most often i play one mission at a time and then go to sleep sometimes less.
I've been pleasantly surprised by how long and varied it is.
I'd agree that the story is nothing to write home about or that the characters aren't a strong suit but so far i haven't been bored by the gameplay any second.
I play it on the easiest difficulty and one mission takes me about an hour to complete.

It has about the standard number of missions for a game like this. I think it seems longer because the story isn't very interesting. The actual gameplay is interesting though and it kept me addicted for ages. I still play from time to time; currently on a third playthrough getting Gold on all the missions!

@gr8m8 Multiple hours for a single mission is definitely you going slowly — especially if you are only a third of the way through the game. But missions do take quite a long time as you get further into the game. Spending an hour (or even two) on a single mission is totally possible in some cases, especially if you fail and have to replay.

@6ch6ris6 Ghost Recon is probably closer to Fire Emblem than Advance Wars... but the only way to know if you will enjoy the game is to try.

@6ch6ris6 I can only say that so far i've always lost interest in the Fire Emblem games early on. And i very much intend to replay and complete Ghost Recon : Shadow Wars in the harder difficulty settings somewhere down the road.
Make of that what you will.

No. Longest I spent on a mission was an hour and a half. Are you new to strategy games?

Yeah unless you're doing something wrong, there's no way any mission can't be beaten in normal mode under two hours. I love the amount of content in this game. I can't stand the fact that Castlevania is in the same price range but lasts 5 times less.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. This isn't the first Turn-Based Strategy game I have played, but it's among the first. I play on the hardest difficulty. Don't get me wrong, this game is never TOO frustrating (though it does have its moments), but I still love it's lengthiness.
To clarify, this is my "On-The-Go" game, so I don't normally play an entire mission in one moment.

@6ch6r6is This game definitely isn't for everyone; some of the missions will feel the same and others will feel epic. Missions may take a while for you like they do for me. But I definitely recommend this game, especially now that it has a lower price (I assume).

@Ralizah I am sort of new to this genre. I'm ashamed to say I grew up with games like Call of Duty (which I've come to dread), and this game has been pretty interesting for me. It's not like other games like Final Fantasy (Which I never played myself, but watched my uncle play a lot), and not only because of the sense that this is a Ghost Recon game that we're talking about, but it just feels different and I like it. I do try to take my time, but I tend to be an overachiever. I try to do everything I can, whether that be kill every enemy or make sure all my guys stay alive, etc.

Once again, thanks for all the responses, guys. Glad to know that I'm not VERY far from the average time (and in all honesty, very few missions take more than 2 1/2 hours).

Took me about 40 hours (IIRC) to finish the game all nicely and stuff and with some of the zombie missions.
No, it's not too long. It's my favorite 3DS game to this day

Of these two, it's closer to FE, but strictly speaking, being a game made by the creator of Rebelstar, Laser Squad and X-COM, you can expect it to be like these games (and it is, it most feels like Laser Squad -> or Rebelstar's GBA reboot, if you ever played it).

Western-style* TTBSes are a rarity on handhelds (GBA had one - Rebelstar Tactical Raiders; DS had two - Jagged Alliance and WH40K Squad Command; 3DS has one - this game), for some reason.

Yes, it may have seemed a tad too lengthy, but only because I had such a great time and wanted to finally wrap it up... savour it, tis a good un... surprisingly good effort for an experiment on a new system at the time...

You don't often hear people complaining a good game is too long lol. I'm glad it never seems to end. Too many people stop half way and call it a game. Still one of the best reasons to own a 3ds and it was one of the first!

I thought the length of the game was fine. Then again, I was hoping for a sequel by now, too.

A tad too long but keeps attention = Shadow Wars
Fantastic artwork/characters and soundtrack but... oh my goodness why did it need to be 40 stages long?!? oh look, wet paint drying... = Project X Zone

I stopped in the last few levels after something else attracted my attention. I really need to get back to this game. I'll probably just start a new playthrough.

I started it over again recently as well but once again quit lol. I'll get through it one day! Mayne after Overclocked but the game styles are too similar.
