Hi all =] just to make clear- this isnt a recommendation topic, but one in which I would like to get a few tips for getting into monster hunter. I currently have monster hunter 3 ultimate on my new 3DS XL and after I finished my backlog I decided to give it a go =]
The main things Im concerned about are the difficulty level (are the battles tiring and too long?) the control aspect (is it comfortable without the CPP or anything additional?) and in general, how do I get into this series which is pretty much different from every other game I experienced on the console, like pokemon, fire emblem and bravely default?
Remember that armor crafting is serious business, I recommend using http://kiranico.com/en/mh4u to find every item you may need (along with monster weaknesses and weapon trees).
Overall Monster Hunter is one of the hardest games to get into period, but once you get hooked it's easily one of the best RPG's you'll ever play.

Always remember to bring Bug Nets and Pickaxes along with you, regardless of quest type. You never know when a gathering spot might give you something you've been aching for!
Once you start finding Armorstones, make sure you level up your gear, provided you plan on wearing it for a while.
Buy the Combo Books and use your chest at home (or in the Tavern area) to combine items for notably higher success rates.
But most of all, don't give up. If you're having trouble on a certain Quest, come back to it later, try upgrading your equipment, combine and bring better items, etc. The games may be tough at times, but they're so ultimately rewarding (see what I did there?) that it's worth sticking with it.
Thanks everyone! thats a huge help =] I really want to get into this series, and I guess the one thing that stands in my way is the difficulty level of the game which you all mentioned XD from vidoes I saw its clearly one of the hardest games out there. but if its rewarding and addiciting as you all say, it will be worth to learn the mechanics and give it a go =]
@VoltageX:
Hello, Novice hunter here. I played Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Wii U by myself for about five hours, and then stopped. It was too hard and frustrating to get to the rewarding bosses, so I quit. However, I came back a few months later with a couple of friends, and had so much more fun. I put in about another 25 hours after this. Yeah, Novice tip, find some friends who are good hunters. I still have not played much MH4U because I could never get online to work well.
Press Y to sheathe your weapon so you can be more mobile and sprint if the monster gets angry
Learn to use the emergency dodging move. While sprinting by pressing R, press B to perform a dive. During the entire animation of the dive you can't be hit. Very useful move for beginners
When a monster goes into rage mode, it might be best to leave the current area and replenish your life/stamina gauges....let the monster calm down a bit before going back to it.
@Megumi: Is it? Like is that the general consensus?
I found MH4U far easier and it seemed to scale difficultly better for newcomers then previous entries.
@pherret022: thats a bit underwhelming for me, to be honest XD Im a single player type of gamer, at least at most cases. is the single in monster hunter 3U that frustrating? will I be able to enjoy it after I learn the mechanics some more?
and thanks everyone =] about 4U, I cant get it anyway so Im staying with 3U for the best or worst XD hope I wont give up on it too soon, I have a habit of giving up early on difficult games (and come back to them a few weeks later XD)

I dunno, Monster Hunter 4 has been pretty much tougher for most categories except for maybe the multiplayer, especially in G-Rank since most players will have some really good equipment lol. The only difficult thing I really experienced in 3 Ultimate was the water battles, but that's more technical than actual difficulty. Plus the western version of 3 Ultimate had a base stat of 50 even with no armor unlike the 3G where you had 0 defense if you had no armor on. So it pretty much made solo runs easier since you can really go with any armor and be fine if you had a decent weapon. Slime was also a bit too strong in that game which made it easy to speedrun, though I guess 4U's equivalent op thing would be mounting.
tl;dr Both games are tough, it's just more of a personal preference of which you think is tougher.
@VoltageX:
I am really bad at the game, so I pretty much needed help from my friends to get through. However, if you learn the game's mechanics you should be able to make it through playing solo.

Seemed like it to me...Only died once in low rank in 3U, 4U I found myself dying more often (even on my first time against Kecha)...and 4U's G-Rank just makes 3U's a joke. lol

Maybe it was easier for me because at that point I was already used to most of the monsters. I think Brachydios and Lucent were the only ones that gave me issues.

And Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is (for me) waaaaay easier to play than Tri or 3U. Cappin' monsters in 4U is almost an automatic now for me, whereas in Tri and MH3U I had a difficult time with it. Either that or I'm getting better at these games....
