Topic: Gameplay/Graphics: what's it to you?

For many years, Nintendo has been big on game play and smaller graphics. Then the 3DS came along. It has absolutely AMAZING graphics! Does this mean the game play could suffer (as far as Nintendo's games go)? Or do you think game play will excel just like it always has? You can also put in whatever comments u may have on the game play/graphics

Side Note: Which system are the 3DS graphics closest to? Gamecube? Wii? maybe even XBOX 360? or somewhere in between?

The gameplay won't suffer. All the 3D stuff is hardware-side, so now it's in the 3DS they'll just have to make games like they normally do and the 3DS will make it 3D. There probably won't be much extra work involved making each game display in 3D.

Sidenote: They look closer to Gamecube output, but on the small resolution screens they'll appear much better.

It's funny how many people are talking about the quality of graphics on the 3DS. Yes, the 3D feature is really cool. The actual graphics, however, don't seem any more impressive than what the aging PSP handheld can already offer. Am I wrong?

The good news is that graphics shouldn't affect the gameplay of "real" games. There might be a few glorified tech demos early on that rely on 3D graphics to be worth playing, but that will probably not last too far into the systems lifespan.

Yea I agree, the graphics look great and I would say (only from what I have seen as of now) they look to be as good as the PsP's, maybe slightly better, maybe not. We will really have to wait to see it in action with better videos I think before we can make that judgement.

As far as games go, i dont expect to see them suffering at all.

I personally think it didn't look much better than the PSP. That might be saying a lot since the system isn't out yet and games get better visually as companies get use to new hardware.

Only time will tell. They were really mumm on the specifics such as system specifications.
I personally want to know how much RAM it will have. If they are including a browser I want it NOT to suck.

there's a comparison here that makes it pretty clear how much better the graphics are on the 3DS compared to a normal DS. to me, the better improvement is the screen size: http://ds.ign.com/articles/109/1099732p1.html

Kid Icarus didn't look too impressive, only around PSP level but the Metal Gear Solid 3 real time demo(camera can be moved freely) proves that the 3DS is much more powerful and due to its shader capabilities is actually more capable than anything up to and including the Wii in some aspects.

and if you want to compare screens, here's some shots of Peacewalker which is a good comparison due to the sharing the same character and also because Peacewalker has the best graphics on the PSP.

I personally think that graphics can be a huge part of the game. A few examples are...
Mirrors edge
Bioshock
Resident Evil (If the zombies didnt look like zombies it wouldnt be the same)
X-Scape
F.E.A.R. (Imagine if it was bright and colorful instead of dark and creepy)

i think nintendo i asstill gonna do wat they do and gameplay will b there as normal

The comparison isn't mine, it's from a user named Arnon on N4G.com(I think)... but it's a really good comparison.

The Resident Evil: Revelations demo was real time though with the ability to move the camera and the lighting would probably not be that good during gameplay but the character models are legit, you can tell by the imperfections and noticeable lack of polygons in certain areas(most arms strangely enough).

What's a game with bad game play and great HD graphics? ????
What's a game with great game play and non-HD graphics? ????

See the difference? Play the difference. Graphics really don't matter to matter to me. As long as the game is fun I don't care if the graphics are "bad" or whatever.

Just for you.

Yes Chris does look close to his Resi 5 incarnation but if you look at his arms on the shot where he's walking through the corridor you can see it has less polygons.

The environments in the MGS demo look fantastic to me but I don't really know how or why character models would look superb and environments poor, I'm not a developer after all.

EDIT: Here's a perfect example of Resi though:

Look at her arm, where the sleeve isn't smooth, showing a lack of polygons. If it wasn't real time that would be smooth as you can see in the CG in DS games.

That's a pretty good catch, I ownder if you are right. Good call nonetheless.

Good graphics are nice but I'd rather play a good game that keeps my interest for a long period of time than the videogame equivalent of a 90 minute movie that you won't want to watch again.

However... if a good game doesn't have good graphics then I would want a remake with good graphics. Or better graphics, whatever. Keep the quality the same but make the graphics much better. If they wanted to remake the original NES Zelda game with realistic graphics then I'd tell them to go ahead.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

Good graphics =/= bad gameplay

There really is no direct relationship between the two unless the developer solely focuses on one versus the other
