I think Awakening because I liked the characters a lot more. I liked Frederick, Maribelle, Owain, Victor, Churche, Olivia, and a lot of others. I don't feel a connection with really any of the characters in Fates.
@Rexcalibr Ask yourself the question: would you feel the same if you'd played Fates before Awakening?
I've not played either yet, but have recently bought them both. The consensus I'd found before deciding which to get (I actually bought Fates and didn't intend to get Awakening until I found it for a great price) was that Fates had better mechanics etc but Awakening had the better characters/story.
I look forward to finding out myself one day...
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
Fates. Awakening's pair up mechanic is farcically inept conmapred to Fates', and its overall gameplay in terms of map/objective variety can't compare to Conquest in particular. Birthright just feels like a better Awakening as well, with the fact they tell a similar plot but with Fates' improved mechanics (no weapon durability, better animation, My Castle, the addition of several great new classes/weapons, the updated weapon triangle, etc.) it is the better of the two.
Awakening's characters are better developed and more likeable, and I'd still recommend people play that first before Fates, if only because of the fact that Awakening would be a lesser experience if you'd already got used to those improvements I mentioned above.
While most people here feel that Fates is the better game, for someone who has never played a Fire Emblem game before, and who's only knowledge of Fire Emblem is that there are numerous Fire Emblem characters in Smash 4, which game would be best suited for me? Is Awakening more friendly to new players, or does Birthright do that since Conquest is the more difficult game?
@Portal_King in terms of accessibility I'd say Birthright and Awakening are about level, both are easy enough to understand and get into even on classic, and even when they get difficult later on it's very easy to have OP characters that will help considerably. Definitely don't start with Conquest or one of the older games if you're worried about accessibility, difficulty spikes all over the place.
Though I will reiterate again that the main reason to play Awakening first is so you're not spoiled by Fates' improvements beforehand. Lucina, Chrom et all in Awakening are great but the plot and script aren't exactly Oscar bait and are quite typical of JRPGs.
That's my take on it anyway. I personally got into the series with Radiant Dawn and whilst I still think the older FE games are great and worth playing in a post Awakening/Fates world I can't recommend them as starting points.
What made Awakening so good to me was the characters. Fates introduces way too many characters all at once but nothing really to distinguish them from one another. From what I played, the storyline was two families trying to convince the main character that he is part of thier family and not the other.
I didn't bother getting that far in the game because I wasn't having fun. Didn't care for the My Castle thing very much at all.
Fates. It had better mechanics and maps. The story is better and gives it a more believable sense, since its not fiddling with the main timeline like Awakening. Characters are still tropy as hell, but at least charming and better revolved around, so it has improved. Feet.
I also don't think you need Awakening to get into FE, as Birthright is just as, if not, more accessible.
Or play FE7. Kick your butt a little, but iconic Badass tutorial Lyn tells you how to git gud.

I must say I prefer awakening. Fates did bring some new elements and aspects, but awakening just felt better for me. its not just for the characters and story line- something about how the game developed and you could go on chapter after chapter... I got addicted to it way easier than fates. fates is intersting from the aspect of divided storylines and it does bring something darker, but idk... just liked awakening more.
For story and characters, Awakening and in second place Birthright. They play it safe, but the story makes sense. In my opinion, Awakening characters are more likeable than Fates.
For gameplay mechanics, Conquest. The levels are old school FE.
After playing through a good portion of Conquest, can honestly say I think Awakening is better. Sure there are more features on the battlefield with dragon veins and the My Castle thing but what made Awakening so great was the relationships and character development. The characters in Fates just don't have the charm of Awakening.
Something I don't understand why they remove is the voice acting during support conversations. It's so boring to just read the conversations with no sound effects.
