Sapphire: Because they fixed so much wrong with the games. Special got divided into two stats (SPA SPD) , types were no longer locked to a certain stat. example: all fire attacks were special in old games, all types were either or.. Along with this they added some of the coolest stuff, bases, weather and some of the best legendaries.

Fire red The game was close to perfect, it was what I would argue to be the best of the games story wise. (The hidden intentions of Giovanni etc.) This game also had the first wireless trading method, an adapter to put on your GBA. It was like heaven, no more cruddy link cables that somehow went poo after 3 uses.

X: Massive overhaul. surprisingly good story. They improved leveling, EV training, IV breeding, and well everything else. Reusable Tm's is probably me favorite feature, and the fairy type was a much liked welcome from me.

The Special stat got divided in the second generation, in Gold and Silver. ...and types were still either physical or special in the third generation, it were Diamond and Pearl that introduced the physical-special split.

Cold/Silver/Crystal - Had all 3 as a kid, though I got them after the GBA came out. By and large the best Pokemon games.

Emerald - the first one I paid for myself, and also the first that took me over the 150 hour mark! Such a great adventure, with memorable places and the best set of legendaries ever.

Black - this one set the bar for cool features in Pokemon games. It was so smooth, and felt fresh, with completely new Pokemon designs throughout the story. Also the first Pokemon to have a meaningful story.

X - The story took a nosedive in this one. The communication features are top notch, and the multiplayer is phenomenonal. Too bad the single player is a bit naff. There's little sense of discovery in this game, with few water routes and linear caves.

Red/Blue/Yellow - again, had all 3. Yes, it was the first game that introduced us to the amazing world of Pokemon, but it's aged pretty badly and is plagued with balancing issues.

White 2 - Could have done a great job continuing the story of Black/White. Instead, we had to wait 2/3 of the game for the story to actually kick in. The new towns are over pretty quickly, adding little to the experience. Same with the new gym leaders. The story lacked the spark of BW. The characters were less interesting. And as much as Game Freak tried to dress it up, most of this game was repeated from B/W. A disappointment to say the least.

Pearl - YAWN. Can anyone remember what happened in this game?

Special mention goes out to the excellent Pokemon Colloseum. Genius Sonority are excellent developers (as seen with Denpa Men and Pkmn Link) and should be drafted in to help with the next Pokemon games.

Bolt_Strike

Platinum and HGSS, both of those games had a lot of depth and variety in the gameplay that we haven't really seen since.

Emerald is probably my favorite by far, because it had so much to offer that I loved: It had the best Battle Frontier, the contests were better/more fun than the ones in DP, the secret bases, etc. Hoenn is also the best looking region, if you ask me, which is why I'm so happy about the remakes, to see how much better it'd look in the XY style. It's also my most played one to date.

As far as story goes, Black/White was really good because of how deep it was compared to other regions'.

It's hard for me to pick.. my very first pokemon game was colloseum so there's that sympethatic part there... then pokemon pearl was my first handheld that I had many great times on with friends (local) and really enjoyed with full experience (I never used a guide so when I found something on my own I was like "oooo".. imagine finding giratina and making your way through turnback cave on your own without even hearing or knowing those two things existed).. then I lost the game somehow and repeated those thrills on diamond.. and then later when it got released platinum which I never put down.

Black and white were IMO the PERFECT pokemon games.. the story was undescribable.. the tone was amazing.. the new pokemon were all amazing in design and well thoughtout..
Unfourenantly..
I just didn't spend alot of time on them as I was really busy and started getting less into pokemon at that time.. so there was no "Messing around, adventuring, exploring" aspect to the game for me like the others.. and I knew the existence of everything from leaks and such on the internet.

To sum up..

I can't pick... I think gen 5 games were the abosolute best of the best.. and made to perfection.. but I didn't stay long enough to grow on it.

4th gen wasn't as great as the other gens.. but I spent countless hours each day on it and discovered everything on my own.. so there's that experience factor I got to have which makes me want to say these games were my favorite.

3rd gen was when the games started for me and Iiked alot of them.. but I only played coloseum not the handhelds (I got the handhelds just to catch the second port required pokemon like solrock and such in gen 4. So there's that sympethetic factor there.. plus alot of my favorite pokemon are gen 3.

1. Fire Red- VS Seeker! I hope they bring that back, it was a fun experience.
2. Pokemon Y- Okay the battle chateau might make up for the vs seeker and you earn much more money but there are more trainers outside.
3. Ruby- The secret bases feature was a great idea and I really enjoyed setting up my base. Looking forward to the new Ruby for 3DS, maybe we can visit other friends' bases, yeah?

You don't have game if you ain't got ME.
